WHAT IS MOTIVATION ?

Motivation is defined as the process that initiates, guides and maintains goal-oriented behaviour Motivation is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge

Phase 1
Motivation pertains to the individual Motivation is based on three factors : (a) Material (b) Intellectual (c) Spiritual

Material factor refers to the essential resources necessary to establish, maintain and enhance the basic quality of life With increased awareness and aspirations amongst the people, the basic quality of life has to be accorded with significant status

Essentials of good quality of life : (a) Physiological - Pay, accomplishment, working environment and family life. (b) Social - Good standing and respect in the community. (c) Security - Terms and conditions of service (d) Self-Esteem - Honor, dignity and self respect (e) Job challenge - Opportunities for individual initiative & responsibility.

Phase 2
Factors affecting motivation of an individual: (a) Individual interest, values, attitudes and beliefs (b) Factors relating to job and work culture and environment, i.e., variety and importance of tasks, the work group rules, procedures and nature of leadership

Phase 3
Duties of a leader: A leader should be able to, motivate his men to the extent that they combine in themselves the right mix of men and task-centered orientation

Some aspects which will help motivate the men and weld the group into a cohesive, winning team are:(a) Personal recognition (b) Praise is much more effective for motivation than blame. If the man is aware that the leader has watched him and is pleased, he will be motivated enough to do better

(c) Criticism. A healthy criticism is always welcome even if the job is done poorly (d) Briefing. A leader should be appointed and clear while briefing men and letting them know what is expected of them (e) The leader should train his men to expect surprises and reverses. The men know and learn this principle, so that they can react spontaneously

Mc Gregors Theory X
People dislike work and will avoid it if they can People must be coerced, controlled, directed, and threatened in order to make them work The average human being prefers to (a) avoid responsibility (b) be directed and supervised

Mc Gregors Theory Y
Expenditure of physical and mental effort in work is natural as play or work People can exercise self direction and self control for the objective to which they are committed The average human being learns, under proper conditions, not only to accept but to seek responsibility

Psychological needs : Food and shelter Security and safety needs : Danger,threats and deprivation. Social needs : Belongings and acceptance Self esteem needs : Recognition and status Self actualization needs : Creativity and self realization

Herzbergs Two-Factor Theory


Psychologist, Frederick Herzberg, set out to determine which work factors made people feel good-bad about their Jobs Analysed and concluded that to understand employee satisfaction (or dissatisfaction), he had to divide work factors into two categories

Motivation factors. Those factors that are strong contributors to job satisfaction Hygiene factors. Those factors that are not strong contributors to but must be present to meet a workers expectations and prevent job dissatisfaction

Phase 5
Objectives: (a) Understand past, present and future concepts (b) Develop employees desire to strive for excellence (c) Understand how YOU influence; your leadership style

(d) Use feedback more precisely, linking it to performance (e) Learn how to offer criticism in a way, which ensures that it is heard (f) Apply models and methods for measuring results (g) Solve problems and produce what you learn

(h) Learn what employees want : 1. Maintainers : who take care of : (i) Working conditions (ii) Company politics (iii) Job security (iv) Pay and benefits (v) Relationship with co workers (vi) Supervision

2. Motivators : who take care of : (i) Achievement (ii) Growth (iii) Recognition (iv) Responsibility

Phase 6
Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. You are special - Don't ever forget it!
