Definition - systems deal with information so they are a class of information system and may build on, or utilize other information sources. Features Developed to support and enhance knowledge-intensive processes, tasks or projects. Users can play roles of active, involved participants in knowledge networks and communities. KMS will have an explicit Knowledge Management objective of some type such as collaboration. Document based i.e. any technology that permits management of formatted documents. Transaction Processing Systems


Definition -refers to a class of systems that facilitate and manage transaction-oriented applications, typically for data entry and retrieval. Features Used with automatic teller machine(ATM) for a bank in transaction processing application. The technology is used in a number of industries, including banking, airlines, and mail order. Applications include electronic banking, order processing, employee time clock systems. Example The most widely used transaction processing system is probably IBMs CICS.

Expert System and Artificial Intelligence


Definition - are computer programs that are derived from a branch of computer science research called Artificial Intelligence (AI). Features Diagnosis and Troubleshooting of Devices and Systems of All Kinds Planning and Scheduling Configuration of Manufactured Objects from Subassemblies Financial Decision Making Knowledge Publishing Process Monitoring and Control Design and Manufacturing Example A typical application in the financial markets is in foreign exchange trading.

Enterprise Resource Planning System


Definition -is actually a process or approach which attempts to consolidate all of a company's departments and functions into a single computer system that services each department's specific needs, Uses Product lifecycle management Supply chain management Purchasing, manufacturing and distribution. Warehouse management Customer relationship management (CRM) Sales Order Processing, Online Sales Financials and human resources Decision support system Example -Order to cash, inventory, order entry, purchasing, product configurator, supply chain planning, supplier scheduling, inspection of goods, claim processing and commission calculation .

Conclusion
Many of these IT processes require compatibility with each other to perform properly. Technology has made us slaves to computers. Everyday life tasks are affected by some type of IT processing applications.
