THE PARTICIPLES

TYPES OF PARTICIPLES

Present Participles expresses an action in progress Ex: I was eating while you were watching TV Past Participle expresses a finished action. Ex; I have studied Latin

The participles are used with auxiliaries BE and HAVE to make progress, Perfect( finished action) and passive verb forms with BE.

USE: 1-Participles can be used as adjectives before nouns. Ex; An interesting book 2-After BE and other verbs Ex: I am tired He come tired 3-Adjective can have objects Ex: English speaking Canadiens (Not Speakingenglish Canadiens)

4- Other compound structures with participles are also common before nouns. Ex: A recently-built house 5- The adjectives of Present Participles usually have an active meaning. Ex: A boring lesson Past Participle usually have a passive meaning. Ex: I am bored

Participles Clauses

Participles can be used in Participle Clauses to give more information about a noun or a verb. Ex 1: Two men arrested for shoplifting were in their twenties ( The two men who were arrested.). Ex 2: We all rushed out, thinking there was a fire (We rushed out because we thought there was a fire)

Perfect Participles

To show that one action was complete before another started. Ex: Having spent five years in Portugal, I Know the country quite well. ( Because I spent five years )

Use the words in brackets as participles in the gaps. Example:_________ news (surprise) Answer: surprising news

Rewrite the sentences replacing the italic part with a perfect participle.

Your answer: Having asked his mother's permission the boy went out to play. As he had drunk too much, he didn't drive home himself. Your answer: Having drunk too much he didn't drive home himself.
