FRANZ SCHUBERT
The earliest master of romantic art song. He never held a position as a musical director or organist, and he was neither a conductor nor a virtuoso. He was the first Viennese composer whose income came entirely from MUSICAL COMPOSITION I have come to the world for no other purpose but to compose.
It is in his songs that the Romantic side of Schuberts nature triumphs. He virtually invented the art song. Schubert has a gift for creating beautiful melodies that perfectly capture a poems character, mood and situation.
ACCOMPANIMENT the figuration of accompaniment always fits the poems mood. His accompaniment often reflects an image in the poem.
Schubert was born during the age of Beethoven, during which important elements of both Classical and Romantic styles existed side by side. Like Beethoven, Schubert can be considered as a bridge from the Classical period to the Romantic period.
Schuberts instrumental music is basically Classical in conception. His Art songs, on the other hand, are entirely product of a Romantic imagination.
