Form- Composition: its appearance and organization (in color or in grayscale, is it simple or complex)

Subject- what it represents (a horse, a landscape, etc.) Content- its meaning (how it makes the viewer feel, what the artist is trying to say)

Elements of Design (7)


Line: vertical, horizontal, diagonal, non linear Shape: geometric (angular or circle based), biomorphic (blob forms) Value: black, grey, white/ light, mid-tones, and darks in color

Texture: perceived and actual


Color: hue (another word for color), intensity (brightness), tint (add white), shade (add black).

Space: areas around subjects or piece of art.


Form: known mainly for 3-D art, but applies to 2-d composition.

Variety: Elements of all types in one work Balance: the equal weight of the work Proportion: scale Emphasis: dominant features Movement: how the eye travels Economy: simplicity Rhythm: harmony or flow of pattern or repetition Contrast: opposites. Unity: when everything works together.
