Behaviour Modification Techniques for Students

1. Positive Reinforcement
It is a sort of reward in the form of:

o o o o

approval o praise a pat o a smile stars o certificates acknowledgement of efforts

2. Positive Attention and Respect

Give the child positive attention and respect when: o he is not misbehaving o has done a good job It acts as a strong reinforcement for the desired behaviour.

3. Role Modeling
In this technique a person learns some new and acceptable behaviour by watching another person perform: o teachers are the role models for students o best teachers are imitated and idealized o no respect for the teachers who have one set of rules for themselves and another for others.

4. Encourage Use of Logic

Student who had not learnt the proper response in the first place are encouraged to assess what it should be. He is encouraged to use: o logic to change his behaviour o to draw a line in right and wrong o to evaluate what will happen if he fails o to realize how respect is earned.

5. Justness and Equity

Every student should be treated equally by the teacher and there shouldnt be any favourtism. The teacher is to ensure that every student gets an opportunity and a fair chance to: o improve o develop his talent o polish his potential o learn the desired behaviour

6. Smart Techniques
Different methods affect students differently. A teacher uses them smartly and allows students to do the various things they enjoy during the free time they get after completing the class work. For example students can be allowed to: o work on any of their projects

o read a story book

o paint / draw / cut / paste

7. Special Attention
In a classroom a teacher pays special attention to students who are: o over confident
o disruptive o lack confidence o reticent

o shy
o introvert

o withdrawn
o careless

There is no blind corner in there.

8. No Public Humiliation
A teacher can check an undesired behaviour any time, however, public humiliation is never recommended. It may result in more aggression.

9. Special Handling
If noticed that a particular behaviour was getting worse, it is better to work on the child separately instead of handling him publicly.

10. Extreme Cases

o Principal to take charge

o discipline committee to handle the case

o the parents be involved o a firm decision be taken, however, the entire process to be handled sympathetically.

Reform the environment changing the environment is more effective than trying to change the students.
