LEXICAL APPROACH

Proposed by Dave Willis (1990) Popularised by Michael Lewis (1993) Lewis (1997) asserts that language consists not of

traditional grammar and vocabulary but often of multiword prefabricated chunks


Lewis (1997) suggests that exposure to enough suitable

input not formal teaching, is the key to increasing learners lexicon and that most valuable vocabulary is acquired not taught.

LEXICAL APPROACH
Multi-word prefabricated chunks: Lexical phrases Lexical chunks Other word combination e.g. collocation, idioms, fixed and semi-fixed phrases How are you?, See you later etc.

LEXICAL APPROACH
Focuses on teaching of phrases which shows words in

combination
Focuses on teaching of phrases which are generative in

a different way from grammar substitution tables

PROBLEMS WITH LEXICAL APPROACH


No explanation of how the learning of fixed and semi-

fixed phrases can be incorporated into the understanding of a language system.


Determining the way in which one might order lexical

phrases for teaching and learning purposes.


The question of in what way is Lexical Approach

different from other approaches to language teaching.
