Everyone has all the intelligences!

Multiple Intelligences

You can choose to strengthen an intelligence!

Multiple Intelligences

Your set of strengthened intelligences right now is just a snapshot. In time, it can change!

What's YOUR Learning Style?

A learning style is the way in which an individual concentrates, processes, and retains difficult information.

What's YOUR Learning Style?

Most children learn in one of the two waysanalytically or globally.

What's YOUR Learning Style?

Global learners

Global learners need to understand concepts before they start concentrating on the details. Endless facts tend to bore them and they lose interest fast.

Global learners

They understand things better when they are introduced to them through short stories, illustrations, humor, or anecdotes. Globals like to learn by being actively involved with information that is interesting and related to their lives.

Global learners

Children who prefer soft light and informal seating such as an easy chair, bed, or lying on the carpet, are likely to be global learners.

Global learners

Having the TV on or music playing should not be cause for alarm. Such things actually help global learners by creating an environment that feels comfortable.

Global learners

Group studying is popular with global learners. They may find it more fun and interesting when solving problems with others.

Global learners

Its not unusual for globals to work on several tasks simultaneously, taking frequent breaks in between. Snacking while working is also part of the global learning style.

Analytical learners

Analytic learners follow a more conventional pattern. They prefer to concentrate on a series of facts that move toward a gradual understanding of an overall concept.

Analytical learners

Having information introduced in a stepby-step approach enables children with analytic styles to learn best.

Analytical learners

Children who like to work sitting at a desk, under a bright light, and in quiet surroundings are likely to be analytic learners.

Analytical learners

They tend to concentrate for long stretches at a time without taking breaks or snacking, preferring to work alone on a single task until it is completed.

Dear Parents,

Always remember!

Always remember!

Not Better, Different Each style is different and offers its own particular strengths.

Always remember!

You can support these strengths by allowing your child to study in the way that feels more comfortable.

Always remember!

Most importantlydont expect your child to study the way you did or the way another child does. The result is likely to be frustrating for both for you, and may even prevent your child from learning.

Begin with the facts and move to a gradual understanding of the topic.

How to encourage interest in a topic:

For both learning styles: Provide books that are related directly or indirectly to the topic. Ask questions to express your interest in the subject. Help your child do projects about the topic. Encourage children to keep journals about their new findings.

How can we motivate children to do their best?

Adapted from Stipek and Seal:

(1) Stress the importance of learning as a goal: Id rather you work really hard, learn something, and get a B rather than breeze through easily or cheat your way and get an A.

How can we motivate children to do their best?

Which elective will you take? Dont take it
just because the teacher is easy. Which subject will teach you more?

If you join the match club, I think you will learn many interesting things. How many spelling words can you get right this week?

How can we motivate children to do their best?

(2) Emphasize understanding: Will you show me how you solved this math problem?

Its fine to make mistakes but can we go

over your English quiz to see how you can correct them?

What did you learn today in school?

How can we motivate children to do their best?

(3) Talk about personal experiences which have helped you to learn:

When our class took a trip to Manila Zoo,

we learned so much about the differences between a tiger and a leopard. Im sure you will learn from your field trip in Avilon Zoo.

How can we motivate children to do their best?

(4) Explain that mistakes are a natural part of the learning process:

Nobody ever learns anything new without making mistakes. Thomas Edison invented many things, but it
took him more than 100 failures to get the bulb going.

How can we motivate children to do their best?

I wonder what went wrong in your science
project. Do you have any idea why the seeds didnt grow? Lets look at it together, shall we?

You should be helping your little brother learn, not teasing him.

How can we motivate children to do their best?

(5) Tell stories about your own mistakes:

When I was in grade 5, I did not tell anyone I didnt know how to do long division. I got
more and more confused, and thank goodness, my father finally noticed and helped me. Since then, I have made it a point to consult my teachers and friends each time I need help.

How can we motivate children to do their best?

(6) Focus on effort and model your own. When you child fares poorly, dont just say: Next time I know youll do better. Focus on how you can help him do better. I know you tried your best. I think I have another strategy to get this experiment to work.

There are only two mistakes on can make along the road to trut There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth;not going all the wa and not starting not going all -the The Buddha way,

and not starting.

Could you tell me, please, which way I ought to go?

It depends a good deal on where you want to get to.

Thank you! The love of Christ urges us on!
