What is Environment?

Surrounding in which we live

Air, Water, Land, Natural Resources, Flora & Fauna, Humans and their interrelation

What is Pollution?

Release of contaminants into environment. Contaminant Types:

Sewage Industrial effluent Solid Wastes generated by Industries Emissions like SOx, NOX, CO, HC, PM etc.

What is Waste?

Types of Pollution

Water Pollution

Air Pollution
Land Pollution Noise Pollution

Industrial Pollution

Noise Pollution Temporary or permanent hearing loss, fatigue

Production

Air Pollution Release of SOx, NOx, SPM resulting into coughing, asthma

Land Pollution Release of heavy metals, leaching of nutrients and health damaging substances resulting into ground water contamination and health impacts

Water Pollution

Release of Sulphate, phosphates, acids, alkalis resulting into damage to aquatic life, water borne diseases

Effects of Pollution
Depletion of Natural Resources
Global Warming Acid Rain

Depletion of the Ozone Layer

Unhealthy & Hazardous Environment to Living beings

Industrial Pollution Control

Pollution can be controlled by proper choice of preventive and remedial measures
3 Rs
Reduce, Reuse, recycle

Preventive
Water Pollution Remedial
Waste Water Treatment Plant

Volume Reduction Strength Reduction Physical Chemical Biological

Only Pollution?
What about the costs Loss of Raw materials Loss of Intermediates and products Manufacturing cost Waste collection & handling Operation of treatment facilities Waste of natural resources

Environmental Regulations In India

Water (P & C P) Act, 1974, & rules Air (P & C P) Act, 1981, & rules Environment (Protection ) Act,1986, An Umbrella Act, & rules Hazardous Wastes (Management & Handling) Rules 1989 with amendment rules, 2000. Manufacture, Storage & Import of Hazardous Chemicals Rules 1989, with amendment rules, 2000.

Rules notified under the Environment (Protection ) Act,1986

Bio-Medical Waste (Management & Handling) Rules 1998. Solid Wastes (Management & Handling) Rules 2000. Ozone Depleting Substances (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000.

PREVENTION OF POLLUTION

Bunding for Storage Areas. Controlling Emission Reduce waste generation Reduce, Reuse & Recycle Using Environmentally Friendly Alternatives

INDUSTRIAL WASTE

Non Hazardous Waste:Metal Scrap

Used Paper& Plastic

Packaging Material
e.g. boxes, plastic, wood, paper

Hazardous waste Empty Containers

e.g. paint, chemical & oil drums

Paint Sludge

ETP Sludge
Waste Oils

Various Types of Wastes

COMMON METHOD OF WASTE DISPOSAL

Non Hazardous Waste:- These wastes to be recycled inhouse at possible extent and finally disposed to authorised recycler or can be sold as scrap material.

Hazardous Waste:- These waste shall be collected and disposed to pollution control board authorised recycler or disposal agency.

WHAT IS THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT?

Improper Treatment & Disposal of Waste Can Impact On The Environment: Contamination to Groundwater, Rivers, Lakes & Oceans Generation of Dangerous Gases From Landfill Unhealthy Environment for Community.

HOW TO REDUCE WASTE?

The Best Way Is, Not To Generate Waste In The Very First Place
OR

Alternativelyminimize The Generation of Waste

ENVIRONMENTAL INCIDENT
Spillage of Chemicals / Wastes on the

Ground
Visible Emissions of Gases / Fumes
Unusual Smells Loud / Unusual Noise

Non compliance with consent conditions

All Environmental Incidents must be reported and investigated as per TBSL Reporting & Investigation guideline

ENVIRONMENTAL INCIDENT
Example of Environmental incident What to do if I observe the Environmental Incident?
Stop the Spillage, Leakage immediately.
Contact to supervisor / Engineer. Collect the spill and send it for disposal by proper labellling & packing. Help supervisor to fill the environmental incident form. Follow-up for the corrective actions suggested.
