1. The KBSR UPSR Science paper is only evaluated at the central level by the Examination Board. 2. The important point that pupils must be aware of the UPSR examination are as follows : Evaluation Scope Syllabus Time allocated Question type : Central level : The Primary School Years 4, 5 and 6
: 1 hour 15 minutes : Section A : 30 objective questions - Multiple choice questions : Section B : 4 or 5 questions - Structured questions Proposed time : Section A : 45 minutes Allocation : Section B : 30 minutes
Section A
In this section, there are a total of 30 questions. The questions are designed to test the science process skills of the pupils. For example: making inferences, classification, etc.
Section B
A) In this section, 4 or 5 questions are asked. The questions are usually based on experiments. The questions will usually contains diagrams, tables, observations, etc. Most questions will be related to the following :
a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h)
Starting the experiment objectives Determining the variables Making the hypothesis Starting the pattern of change in a variable in the form of a table or graph Making inferences Making predictions Identifying relationships between variables Making conclusions
If a pupil can recognise the question type and practise the method of answering, he or she can achieve a high score.
B. Techniques and methods to help pupils answer question in Section B are outlined below: Step 1
Step 3
Find variables and classify them into these three categories: (i)Manipulated variables (ii)Responding variables (iii)Constants variables Step 4 Start answering the question.
C. Technique to answer the questions (format) 1. Questions that test on objectives Explore the influence of manipulated variables towards the responding variables, or Explore the relationship between manipulated variables and responding variables.
5. Questions that test on making a hypothesis The responding variable . . . Because . . . manipulated. . . 6. Questions that test on making inferences The responding variable . . . Because . . . The manipulated variable. . . 7. Questions that test on making predictions . . . will . . . 8. Questions that test on making conclusions. Similar to making a hypothesis or making a statement based on the findings from an experiments.
SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS - SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS ENABLE PUPILS TO FORMULATE THEIR QUESTIONS AND FIND OUT THE ANSWERS SYSTEMATICALLY.
* USING THE SENSE OF HEARING, TOUCH, SMELL, TASTE AND SIGHT TO FIND OUT ABOUT OBJECTS OR EVENTS
* USING PAST EXPERIENCES OR PREVIOUSLY COLLECTED DATA TO DRAW CONCLUSIONS AND MAKE EXPLANATIONS OF EVENTS.
* MAKING A FORECAST ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN FUTURE BASED ON PRIOR KNOWLEDGE GAINED THROUGH EXPERIENCES OR COLLECTED DATA
* USING WORDS OR GRAPHIC SYMBOLS SUCH AS TABLES, GRAPHS, FIGURES OR MODELS TO DESCRIBE AN ACTION, OBJECT OR EVENT.
DESCRIBING CHANGES IN PARAMETER WITH TIME. EXAMPLES OF PARAMETERS ARE LOCATION, DIRECTION, SHAPE, SIZE, VOLUME, WEIGHT AND MASS
GIVING RASIONAL EXPLANATION ABOUT AN OBJECT , EVENT OR PATTERN DERIVED FROM COLLECTED DATA.
DEFINING CONCEPTS BY DESCRIBING WHAT MUST BE DONE AND WHAT SHOULD BE OBSERVED.
NAMING THE FIXED VARIABLES, MANIPULATED VARIABLE AND RESPONDING VARIABLE IN AND INVESTIGATION MANIPULATED VARIABLE IT CHANGED TO OBSERVE ITS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE RESPONDING VARIABLE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE FIXED VARIABLES ARE KEPT CONSTANT.
MAKING AN GENERAL STATEMENT ABOUT THE REALTIONSHIP BETWEEN THE MANIPULATED VARIABLE AND RESPONIDNG VARIABLE TO EXPLAIN AN OBSERVATION OR EVENT. THE STATEMENT CAN DETERMINE ITS VALIDITY. BE TESTED TO
PLANNING AND CONDUCTING ACTIVITIES TO TEST A HYPOTHESIS. THIS ACTIVITIES INCLUDE COLLECTING, ANALYSING AND INTERPRETING DATA AND MAKING CONCLUSION.
