What is a Fixture? Fixture is a work holding device used to locate accurately and to hold securely single or multiple work pieces so that the required machining operations can be performed.

A fixture should be securely fastened to the machine table.

Difference between Jigs & Fixtures

JIG It is a work holding device, which holds and positions the work piece and guides the cutting tools to the work piece FIXTURES It is work holding device, which hold and positions the work piece and does not guide & locate the cutting tool

JIGS It is usually not fixed to the machine table ( in case of small size holes ( less than dia. 6 mm.) It is usually light in construction It is only used for machining operation FIXTURES It is usually fixed to the machine table It is usually heavier in construction Other than machining operation, it is also used for assembly and welding, inspection operations etc.,

JIG / FIXTURE MAY BECOME OBSOLETE IF THERE IS ANY CHANGE OF PRODUCT DESIGN INITIAL DEVELOPMENT TIME NOT ECONOMICAL IF BATCH SIZE IS VERY LESS LIMITATIONS IN ACHIEVING THE PART TOLERANCES.
