Service Facility Layout

 The fundamental difference between service

facility & manufacturing facility layouts is
that, many service facilities exist to bring
together customer & service.

Types of service facility

1) Those that are almost totally designed

around the customer receiving & servicing
function.

2) Those are designed around the

technologies, processing of physical
materials and production
efficiency.
Special Arrangement for
Particular Types of Plants
 The manufacturing of detergent
powder.
 The manufacturing of talcum powder.
 The News paper plant.
 The layout of a five star hotel.
 The layout of a cinema theatre.
Arrangement of Other facilities

 Receiving & Shipping points.

 Inspection Facilities.
 Employee Facilities.
 Storage.
 Maintenance
Location of Receiving &
Shipping Department
 Receiving & Shipping department represents the
starting & finishing points respectively in every
manufacturing concern.

 Raw materials enter the plant through the receiving

department, undergo the manufacturing process inside the
plant & reach the customer through the shipping dept.

 The location of the receiving & shipping department

influence the movement of materials.

 The best location of the receiving & shipping dept is at

either end of the plant
Storage

A store room is a place where raw

materials, components, partly
finished goods, supplies & finished
goods are stored.
Should be located close to the
production, receiving & shipping
centres.
Inspection
There are 3 types of inspection:
(i) Inspection of purchased items comprising Raw
materials, parts & supplies.
(ii) Inspection of work-in-process.
This is normally inspected at four points:
1) At the close of departmental responsibility.
2) After those operations during which there is
a high probability of defects, especially if these
defects can be isolated.
3) Before those operations during which
defective items would be sequentially
involved in costly operations.
4) At those places in the process where,
succeeding operations would conceal the
defect and where it would be cured without
great difficulty.
iii) Inspection of finished goods.
 The inspection of the finished products is
essential for the purpose of ensuring that the
quality obtained is the quality intended.

 The final inspection is normally conducted close

to the shipping area.

Maintenance
 Maintenance checks should be carried out
regularly.
 In the large establishments a separate
department is constituted.
Functions:
 Building construction & maintenance
 Heating
 Ventilation
 Air conditioning
 Machine & equipment installation & maintenance
 Maintenance of materials handling equipment
 Lighting
 Safety device, fire protection & collection &
disposal of garbage, scrap.

Employee Facilities
Employee facilities should find a proper place
in any layout.
Some of the employee facilities are as follows
 Time clocks
 Locker rooms
 Toilet facilities.
 Drinking water facilities.
 First aid rooms.
 Cafeteria & safety measures.

 Deciding factor for this should be number of

employees, convenience & avoidance of
congestion.
 Medical aid services should be so located as
to be easily available to all the employees.
 A centralized canteen for whole plant or a
separate canteen for each department should be
provided.
 Employee safety should receive due
consideration by layout engineer
Other facilities

1) Power Generators.
2) Water filters: Are essential in chemical industry.
e.g. : Soap factory, Testing labs
& should be located far from the production
centers.
3) Oil tankers: Needed to store oil.
Are located far away from the center of main
activities.
4) Chilling plant: Supplies chilling water & should be
located close to the boilers.
5) Cleaning & fermentation plant: Are needed in
bakeries.
& both should be located close to the
manufacturing processes.
