CLADDING MATERIALS FOR COMMERCIAL EXTERIORS

ADVANCED BUILDING TECHNOLOGY

EXTERNAL CLADDING....

External cladding of buildings has been a common option for generations, it offers a decorative, weather resistant finish that almost anyone can carryout. Traditionally the finish has been timber planking however the availability of new and more cost effective materials now means that these low maintenance materials are an alternative to timber. These materials keep rain and wind out, thermally insulate the inhabitants from exterior temperatures, structurally support the building and the associated enclosure system, while providing required finish to the surface alongwith.

The choice of use of any of these material should however be made very carefully, keeping in mind the character of the building, the surrounding areas, the climate and weather conditions and the cost of construction.

Various profiles are available for effective and proper cladding as shown to the right, in the illustrations. Square edge : each plank has a uniform thickness (normally 12mm (0.5 inch) to 18mm (0.75 inch)) across its width, the choice of widths typically being from 125mm (5 inch) to 225mm (9 inch). Overlapping the planks allows rain to run down the front.

Feather-edged: each plank is tapered across its width, various widths are available, typically ranging from 125mm (5 inch) to 225mm (9 inch). The tapering typically 18mm (0.75 inch) to 6mm (0.25 inch). Overlapping the planks allows rain to run down the front. Ship-lap : a shaped front face, various widths are available, typically ranging from 100mm (4 inch) to 200mm (8 inch). The profile is such that the bottom edge of each plank (left in above illustration), overlaps the top edge (right above) of the plank below, this causes any rain to run down the front face without finding its way behind the planks.

Tongued and grooved is planed timber (or moulded uPVC) with a flat front face, various widths are available, typically ranging from 100mm (4 inch) to 200mm (8 inch). Having the groove fitted over the tongue of the plank below keeps rain from entering behind. By fixing through the tongue it is possible to conceal the fixings.

uPVC Cladding can offer similar front face appearance to timber cladding but is generally of thinner section as uPVC can be easily moulded, the example right shows typical uPVC ship-lap with tongued and grooved moulding. Because of the ease of moulding uPVC, some ranges offer different mouldings with the same front appearance

Ship-lap, tongued and grooved is very similar to ordinary Ship-lap except that the bottom edge is grooved while the top edge is shaped to fit into the groove of the plank above. An advantage over ordinary Ship-lap planking is that the top edge can be nailed and the nail head covered by the plank above.

Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems (EIFS), commonly known as synthetic stucco, is an exterior cladding system composed of an adhesively or mechanically fastened foam insulation board, reinforcing mesh, a base coat, and an outer finish coat.

These systems resembles traditional masonry stucco finishes. While among the more expensive finishing systems available, drainable EIFS, if properly applied, may benefit the homeowner by providing an insulating exterior finish without the worries about water damage associated with barrier EIFS.

COMPOSITION
While giving the appearance of stucco, EIFS is actually a multilayered wall system that consists of the following components: Insulation Board Made of polystyrene (or similar material), which is secured to the exterior wall surface. Base Coat - Applied on top of the insulation and reinforced with fiber mesh. Finish Coat - Applied on top of the base coat giving a durable, crackresistant finish.

Why EIFS?
EIFS is available in various colors and external textures designed to look like traditional stucco.

Gives a majestic look.

Can be easily shaped and sculpted. Can be used for making decorative bands, quoins, and other adornments. It acts as a great insulator. Reduces energy consumption, reduce air infiltration and increases interior comfort.

PROBLEMS WITH EIFS

Buildings clad with EIFS have a very strong tendency to retain moisture between the sheathing of the home and the finish system.

Split face block is a type of concrete masonry unit (cmu)used in decorative wall building. Each split face block has a rugged rocky texture that is appealing where a natural look is desired. As an attractive alternative to plain concrete block, split face blocks offers more diversity in terms of design. To create this rock wall appearance, the concrete block is split during production. The splitting process is less labor intensive than other cmu manufacturing processes because it does not require glazing, polishing, scoring or fluting. Additions to concrete split face blocks can create artistic representations in the form of simple geometric renderings when installed. Concrete masonry is now available in a large number of surface finishes, unit sizes and colors, Available in various sizes and colors most popular size being 8x8x16. H available is 1-5/8" to 7-5/8".

Split face concrete block

ADVANTAGES
Concrete masonry is easy to work with. Concrete masonry is easy to maintain. Versatility is concrete masonry's best selling point. Passive solar design supporters. It's longer lasting than either wood or asphalt shingles and easier to install than clay roof tile. Offers low cost housing.

DISADVANTAGES
It can generally not be coloured. It cannot be altered after installation. Additional care is required for laying the block Installation is time consuming.

Solarcrete is a wall system that is: - Loadbearing - Insulating (clear to the footer with no thermal breaks) - Earthquake and tornado resistant (it is a reinforced concrete wall.) - Energy efficient (typical Rvalue R36) -Soundproof (STC 75) - Fire resistant (two-hour rated) - Proven (in use since early 70's) - Economical (higher insulating values - lower energy costs) - Eye-catching (design allows for curves or other features at little additional cost) - Labor saving (does not require masons).

Solar crete insulated building systems

Solarcrete is a built-in-place system using 7-1/4" foam with 2-3/8" of fiber reinforced Shotcrete over rebar on each side, making a twelve inch wall.

Full height rebar reinforced foam panels install quickly in and around building framing so that Shotcrete can be installed on a high production basis. These features make this wall system cost effective (in-place cost compare to Brick and Block construction)

Glass in its various forms

Glass is probably one product that finds the most multifarious uses and takes the most diverse forms through sheer innovation. In its basic form (float glass) it is an inorganic product of fusion that is cooled to arigid solid without crystallisation it can take on a transparent, translucent or shiny appearance, by varying its constituents like sand, soda and CLEAR GLASS lime and using special additives. Clear glass is having high light transmission qualities because of their optical clarity and is available in thickness ranging from 2mm to 19 mm and normally in sizes of 2440 x 3660 mm,. .though larger sizes can be made to order. Clear glass is used in: Shopping malls Restaurants Solariums Atriums

TEMPERED GLASS

SAFETY

Glass in its various forms

This is a heat-treated process that offers high strength to annealed float glass. When the glass ruptures, the fragments are small (less that 1/2" pieces), and causes minimal damage. This type of glass is commonly used on bridge windows, portlights (side scuttles), and windscreens. This type of glass provides safety and sound reduction. Solid clear tempered safety glass in thickness of 5mm to 6mm and 8mm to 19mm.

LAMINATED GLASS
Laminated glass consists of two or more pieces of float glass bonded together with a clear layer of PVB. The process combines heat and pressure to bond the layers together into one. This product is favored for protection in high security areas for its retention in the frame when broken and for its sound reduction quality when combined with different thickness of glass. When subjected to stress, laminated glass ruptures with a pattern similar to annealed glass with large shards, however the PVB inner layer holds the shards together.

TINTED SAFETY GLASS

The tint in the standard production of float glass adds glare reduction and a heat reducing feature to the window. The standard tints available are green/blue, gray and bronze. Light transmission and other requirements are available upon request. Solid tinted tempered safety glass in thickness from 5mm to 12mm. Float glass is available in certain tints up to 12mm (1/2"). 15mm (5/8") and 19mm (3/4") only available in clear. Most laminated glass such as heated glass and fire-rated glass is available in a larger selection of tints. This glass type offers the maximum UV protection.

HERMETICALLY UNITS

SEALED

Any composition that includes 2 or more pieces of glass, cleaned, drying media and sealed using a spacebar various thicknesses to separate the glass. Sealing of the glass unit is achieved using poly-ISO Butylin and silicone secondary seal.

FRITTED GLASS
Fritted glass is tempered glass with a ceramic based paint permanently bonded onto the glass during the tempering process. This edge ceramic 'frit' prevents UV rays from penetrating the glass and is commonly used to prevent degrading the bonding sealant.

ELECTRICALLY HEATED GLASS

This glass is supplied to meet ISO Standards which require solid tempered safety glass, laminated in multiple layers. The outer layer of glass represents the monolithic load requirement which is determined by the architect .

INSULATED GLASS
Insulated glass is the superior choice over single glazing. Todays energy codes require insulated glass in nearly every West Coast market. Commonly known as dual pane or dual glazed glass, these units insulate by forming an airtight space between two panes of glass. A spacer separates the panels of glass around the edges and the entire unit is hermetically sealed to keep out condensation.

Glass in its various forms

BENT GLASS
Glass that has been softened during the heat-treating process and shaped to a specified radius. Bent Glass can be laminated for applications which require safety glass and dual-glazed for applications which require glass to have insulating properties.
