SYNOPSIS

Bill, an expatriate officer, works as a secretary to the Menteri, went to fetch him at the airport. Bill noticed that many of the officers there did not respect him and even ignored him. After the Menteris arrived, he was sent back home before he had to go to a meeting at eleven. While the Menteris at his house, he reviewed the important files that are needed in the meeting but it was incomplete. Thus, he was suspecting Bill for not giving his commitment in doing his work. Bill did that because he want his friend, Bob to be the leader of the project since he think that local people were not capable enough to be a leader. But instead of Bob, Kassim was chosen as the leader by the Menteri. Bill doesnt agree with Bobs view on the British officers who should learn to understand the feelings and the way of life of the local people and that they should be given the opportunity to be independent because this is their homeland. After Bill met Amat, he told Bill that the Menteri doesnt like to be called Tuan and he also doesnt like to be treated like a 'white man'. Then only Bill began to realize that Bob is right.

SIGNIFICANT ASPECT/STRENGTH OF THEY DO NOT UNDERSTAND

Make the citizen of Malaya realize that we dont need other people to rule the country, we shape our own nation. The British is no longer the ruler, they just the advisor and they do not have rights to make decision after independence. Shows the philosophy of the Malay minister, where his decision are for the sake of the people.

They do not understand-Bill thought that no one understand what is his purpose of guiding, but in the end he is the one who does not understand about the mentality of the Malay people after independence. The Malayan people have the ability to do something if they are given chances, maybe doing a better job than the British.

These white people seem to be sharp in every way-sharp eyes, sharp nose, sharp face and sometimes their tongue are poisonous. Perhaps they forget their altered position. They think we are easily flattered. They think we dont know that they first came out here as officers.

Moral Values
Do not underestimate others ability. Someone should not be proud with the power that they have. One must have faith and confidence in the ability of their own people in matters of developing and managing the country. Someone should be honest in performing their duties.
