A STUDY ON SHIFT WORKING SYSTEM AT AMARA RAJA

INTRODUCTION
The

term shift work is defined as an arrangement of working hours that uses two or more teams (shifts) of workers, in order to extend the hours of operation of the work environment beyond that of the conventional office hours.

Amara Raja Group was founded by Mr.Ramachandra Naidu.Galla with a vision to offer quality products/solutions to the power sector by installing manufacturing facilities in rural India. Amara Raja industries has four major business unit they are Batteries ltd , power systems , Mangal Industries Ltd. Amara Raja Electronics Ltd.

NEED OF THE STUDY


In present scenario shift working places a crucial role in manufacturing industries for continuous production. Shift work is now a major feature of working life across a broad range of industries The features of the shift systems operated can impact on the wellbeing, performance, and sleep of shift workers. The study is about the perception of the employees about the different shift working and its impact on the effectiveness of work.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study is confined to Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation and Civil Maintenance jobs that would be required for keeping the plant and allied facilities in good operating condition at all times.

OBJECTIVES

To know the opinion of the employees regarding shift working system. To identify the risks and health disorders associated with shift working system. To suggest measures to overcome the health disorders.

METHODOLOGY

The data has been collected from the two sources: Primary Data Secondary Data

SAMPLE SIZE : The sample size for the study is 100.

PERIOD OF THE STUDY : The period of the study is for 60 days. SAMPLING METHOD: Stratified random sampling. STATISTICAL TOOLS: Percentage Analysis

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The perception bias or attitude of the respondents may also act as hurdles to the study.
The sample size taken for the research is small due to the constraint of time. Employees hesitate to respond to certain questions.

FINDINGS
84%

of the respondents are seems to be not required any changes in shift patterns and only 16% of the respondents are seems to be changes required in shift pattern. 43% of the respondents are getting frequently headache, 16% of the respondents are getting vomiting symptoms , 15 % of the respondents are getting stomach pains including burning symptoms , and remaining 26 % of the respondents are getting body pains frequently during shift work timings.

41% of the respondents are feeling 1st shift is comfortable to work, 48 % of the respondents are feeling 2nd shift is comfortable shift to work and only 11 % of the respondents are feeling 3rd shift is comfortable shift to work. 49 % of the respondents are suffering from back pain & neck pains . 19 % of the respondents are suffering from diabetes ,8% of the respondents are suffering from hyper tension , 6 % of the respondents are suffering from high cholesterol ,6 % of the respondents are suffering from heart disease ,12 % of the respondents are suffering from gastritis . 92% of the respondents are agreed that the company providing medical facility immediately and only 8 % of the respondents are doesnt agreed the company providing medical facility immediately.

SUGGESTIONS

Most of the employees are happy with the A B C type of shift change rather than other shift timings. The employees are preferring to increase the nap period during their shift timings to improve their efficiency in work(especially in night shifts). The safety measures are satisfactorily been done in organization. However it can be further improved as the odor that generates in the production area can cause ill health to the workers in the shift.

CONCLUSION

It is concluded that the overall employees working satisfactorily in their shift systems accordingly. It provides good leave facility to the employee and the healthy environment has takes place in the organization and Medical claim policy is very helpful to the employees.
