WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?

social media noun 1. websites and applications used for social networking.

WHAT IS SOCIAL NETWORKING?

social networking noun 1. the use of dedicated websites and applications to communicate informally with other users, or to find people with similar interests to oneself.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE ADDICTED TO SOCIAL NETWORKING?

WHY SHOULD I USE SOCIAL MEDIA?

Connect with local friends and family Connect with distance friends and family Connect with those of similar interests Now being utilized to spread the gospel

CAN EXPRESS GRATITUDE AND JOY ABOUT GODS GREAT PLAN FOR HIS CHILDREN IN A WAY THAT CAN BE HEARD . . . AROUND THE WORLD. SOMETIMES A SINGLE PHRASE OF TESTIMONY CAN SET EVENTS IN MOTION THAT AFFECT SOMEONES LIFE FOR ETERNITY. PRESIDENT DIETER F. UCHTDORF (ENSIGN, MAY 2011, WAITING ON THE ROAD TO DAMASCUS.)
YOU CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CHURCHS THOUGHTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA ON LDS.ORG SPECIFICALLY HTTP://WWW.LDS.ORG/PAGES/SOCIAL-MEDIA-HELPS?LANG=ENG APOSTLES EVEN HAVE THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL FACEBOOKS PAGES AS WELL SOME MISSIONARIES!

THE TARGETED DEMOGRAPHICS FOR ALL OF THESE WEBSITES AND APPS IS 15-25 YEARS OF AGE SO IT IS OUR DUTY AS PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS TO KNOW HOW THESE WEBSITES WORK.
President Thomas S. Monson has counseled: Our children today are growing up surrounded by voices urging them to abandon that which is right and to pursue, instead, the pleasures of the world. Unless they have a firm foundation in the gospel of Jesus Christ, a testimony of the truth, and a determination to live righteously, they are susceptible to these influences. It is our responsibility to fortify and protect them (Three Goals to Guide You, Ensign, Nov. 2007, 118).

IN AN ARTICLE IN THE CHURCH NEWS ENTITLED PARENTS, TEENS STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA IN EXPLAINS THAT:

Teens who are connected with their parents on social media feel closer to parents in real life.

Parent-child social media interaction may lead to higher rates of pro-social behavior.
Used appropriately, parent-child social networking allows more opportunities for parents to give positive feedback and show affection. A lot of teenagers are on Twitter, and not a lot of parents are on that. If you really want to stay involved with your kid, you cant be afraid to learn new technology, to learn new websites, and to know where your teen is. Sarah Coyne, professor of family life, BYU

FACEBOOK

1. WHO IS USING FACEBOOK?

Since its inception in February 2004, Facebook has grown
significantly, and it now has more than 60 million active users.

According to Facebooks statistics page, the number of active users

has doubled every 6 months, with 250,000 new users joining each day since January 2007 for an average of 3% growth per week.

According to internet-ranking company comScore, Facebook is the

sixth-most trafficked site in the U.S., with the average user spending 20 minutes a day actively using Facebook by uploading photos, sending messages, or even having discussions within a group.

WHAT CAN YOU FIND ON FACEBOOK?

Simply put, if people have an interest, it is part of Facebook. A user just has to enter a topic, such as video games or new technology, into the search box and then hit the search button. Up to 1,000 profiles are displayed, 20 at a time, starting with people in the users network. If a user who belongs to the University of North Carolina (UNC) network is searching for basketball fans, the results returned would be people in the UNC network first, followed by those in other networks. Facebook also has a poke feature, which, in most circles, is regarded as a form of online flirtation, comparable to match.coms winks. When one user is poked by another, a notification appears on the users homepage, allowing him or her to either poke back the other user or hide poke, which makes the poke disappear.

EVERYONE IS ON FACEBOOK SO
I thought it would be important to talk about your privacy settings on FACEBOOK in particular this evening. If there is anything else you are unsure of how to do on FACEBOOK (ie posting a photo etc) there is a link to a great step by step instruction in the handout!

SET THE PRIVACY OPTIONS FOR EACH PIECE OF INFORMATION YOU ADD. WHEN YOU ADD INFORMATION TO
YOUR PROFILE, YOU CAN CLICK THE PRIVACY BUTTON TO THE RIGHT OF THE ENTRY. THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO CHOOSE WHO CAN SEE WHAT YOUVE SHARED. YOU CAN SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS, THE PUBLIC, AND SPECIFIC LISTS (GROUPS) OF FRIENDS.

CLICK THE GEAR ICON IN THE TOP-RIGHT CORNER OF THE FACEBOOK PAGE. CLICK THE PRIVACY SETTINGS OPTION TO OPEN THE PRIVACY SETTINGS AND TOOLS PAGE.

Review your available options. This menu will allow you to change the basic privacy settings that affect your whole Facebook account. Because of the social nature of Facebook, people tend to post a lot of personal information. Customizing your settings can help you keep personal information private. Be sure to review this section carefully so that you know who can see what. You can set the default for who can see any future posts you make (this can be changed for individual posts when you make them). You can change who can send you a friend request. By default, this is set to Everyone, but you can change it to Friends of Friends, which means that the person who sends the request has to be Facebook Friends with someone on your Friends list. You can change who can look you up by email address and phone number. You can tell search engines to not link to your timeline. This will prevent your timeline from showing up in web searches.

CHECK YOUR TIMELINE AND TAGGING SETTINGS. IN THE LEFT MENU UNDERNEATH THE PRIVACY OPTION, CLICK TIMELINE AND TAGGING. THIS MENU WILL ALLOW YOU TO CONTROL WHO CAN POST TO YOUR TIMELINE, WHO CAN SEE THINGS ON YOUR TIMELINE, AND HOW YOU WANT TAGGING TO BE MANAGED. TAGGING IS THE ACT OF ADDING LINKS TO OTHER PEOPLE IN PHOTOS AND POSTS.

INSTAGRAM

WHAT IS INSTAGRAM?
Instagram is a photo sharing mobile app thats (currently) only available on the iPhone and iPod Touch. Users can either upload a photo from their devices library or take a photo right then and there and use Instagram to change the way the photo looks.

IF YOUD LIKE INFO ON HOW TO SIGN UP FOR AND USE INSTAGRAM PLEASE VISIT:
http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Instagram Safety first! There are some things you need to know about your privacy on Instagram! I have included the general instruction to set your profile to private in the handout. But taking to that a step further here are some additional things to consider.

Geotagging For details instructions on how to disable Geotagging on your Iphone or Android phone you can visit http://internetsafety.yoursphere.com/2011/03/location-based-services-and-geotagginghow-they-work/ Age-Appropriateness Blocking and Reporting Users and Content -- While there are tools for reporting/blocking users and inappropriate content, know that people will, and do upload nude photos. In fact, the editorial team found a multitude of bestiality photos in less than one minute when searching for friends. Its a sad fact, and another commonsense reason that you shouldnt allow your children to use Instagram. If you are an Instagram user, they provide easyto-use tools to block or report someone. The steps below show you how: - See more at: http://internetsafety.yoursphere.com/2012/02/instagram-is-it-okay-for-kids-what-parentsneed-to-know/#sthash.J3otOQGi.dpuf

NOW THAT WE HAVE GONE OVER THE SCARY STUFF LETS TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE FUN THINGS INSTAGRAM CAN OFFER. WHAT IS THIS?

#
a hash tag is simply a way for people to search for tweets, groups or images that have a common topic and to begin a conversation. For example, if you search on #LOST (or #Lost or #lost, because it's not case-sensitive), you'll get a list of tweets related to the TV show. What you won't get are tweets that say "I lost my wallet yesterday" because "lost" isn't preceded by the hash tag.

JUST ABOUT ANYTHING CAN BE A HASHTAG BUT SOME POPULAR ONES ARE:
#photooftheday Instagram hosts a photo of the day contest
every day. This is your chance to participate (or scroll through the entries)

#instamoodreflective of your mood #nofilter Implies that shot taken was taken without an Instagram

cool teacher who is trying to teach you the ways of the Instagram!

INSTAGRAM LIKE FACEBOOK IS SOCIAL APP SO YOU CAN CONNECT WITH THOSE WITH SIMILAR INTERESTS
Instagram will take you through your email address and Facebook to find those you can follow but you can also follow organizations and groups.

Karen gave me a few good suggestions.

THERE ARE INSTRUCTION FOR HOW TO FIND SPECIFIC PEOPLE AND GROUPS ON THE LINK IN THE HANDOUT. NEXT I WANT TO DISCUSS SOME COOL INSTAGRAM TRICKSSHHH IS A SECRET!
Saving Instagram photos without publishing them to your feed: Lets say you take a great photo with Instagram, but you dont want to upload it or you want to save it to see if you can get a better one. With Instagram, normally you need to upload the photo to shoot the next one. To get around that either start shooting while in Airplane mode (under phone settings) or minimize Instagram after you take the picture, turn on airplane mode, reopen Instagram and when you hit share, the upload will fail, but save the photo to your phone. Then just hit the x on the fail screen and carry on. Dont forget to turn airplane mode back off to share.

INSTAGRAM IS JUST FUN!

TWITTER

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

I have included a Twitter cheap sheet link on the hand out for you to review how all the hashtagging and chirping goes.

7 reasons (for the 7 years TWITTER as been around) that you SHOULD BE on Twitter.
1. Interesting People- anyone can follow anyone on Twitter, no agreeing to etc, which could open things up to hearing what some interesting people might have to say!

2. Breaking News - Who needs newspapers when Twitter usually beats them?

3. Tracking Trends - If a YouTube video is going viral then it will be getting shared on Twitter. 4. Company Contact Get a quick response by embarrassing a brand on Twitter. 5. Celebrity - almost all A-B and C list celebrities on are TWITTER. It is an interesting way to get a peep into their lives. Unlike Facebook where Celebrities fans can create pages just dedicated to posting pictures of them Twitter is typically actual thoughts and comments on the world.

6. Creative Outlet - You may want to parody a famous person, write short poetry, recount witty anecdotes, or tell lame jokes. Twitter gives you a certain sense of anonymity to plumb the depths of your creativity

7. 140 Characters - Lack of attention span is why TL;DR (Too Long; Didnt Read) became so popular, and it has also certainly helped foster the popularity of Twitter. You only have 140 characters to say what you want to say in a tweet (excluding URLs).

Enough about Twitter!

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK : SNAPCHAT

Facebook wanted to buy SNAPCHAT, offered them 3 Billion and they turned it down! WHY?

There were the teenagers who spoke at the panel for Business Insider's IGNITION conference. When they were asked about Facebook, they practically shuddered. Their parents are on Facebook! Facebook, for them, is the school dance where the chaperones keep the lights on and watch like hawks from the corner.

WHAT IS SNAPCHAT?
Snapchat lets you send photos or videos that auto erase in 10 seconds. Now you see it, now you dont. My friends son received a video Snapchat a short film a female student in his class had taken of the roofline of her house, panning down, and ending on her breasts in a bikini. This girl was in sixth grade. The only reason my friend saw it? She picked up her sons phone in keeping with their stated family policy of I can check your phone at any time and saw it before he had his Mission Impossible moment.

JUST IN CASE.
Where do you think those pictures go? Give an overview of Internet 101 and explain how servers work and how all data whether images or text pass through servers and are typically stored there, even after a user deletes a file. Go online to the Snapchat site and show your child this legalese: Although we attempt to delete image data as soon as possible after the message is transmitted, we cannot guarantee that the message contents will be deleted in every case. This is a great caveat emptor lesson, Internet-style. Teach kids to question things that marketers tell them and to ask follow up questions if theyre not satisfied with the response. Also, remind them that Snapchats can be captured via screenshot. They were just recently hacked and 4.6 million Snapchat app usernames and phone numbers were leaked.

WHO DO YOU TRUST?

This is the biggie. Have your kids write out a list of people who have their back. Explain how we have different friends for different reasons, but not everyone has our best interests at heart. Explain how the people on their trust list are gold, the people we believe would never seek to embarrass us. We could send a goofy picture to these people and they wouldnt post it with a disparaging comment. Have them post this list in their room and add to it as they continue growing up. Explain to them that there might be people on that list today that will lose that place of honor sometime in the future. Ask your child whose trust list they think their name would be on, and how they earned that place. This will help kids understand how the word Friend something we have extended to hundreds of lightweight contacts in our circle is actually reserved for relatively few people.

HOW CAN WE USE SNAPCHAT IN POSITIVE WAYS?

Kids cannot be in trouble by virtue of what they receive. But they can think in advance about who they trust. Encourage or help them to set their Snapchat settings to only exchange Snapchats with those on their trust list. Show them how to block a friend from sending Snapchats in case a friend uses questionable judgment. And then imagine together some really fun, positive uses of the application. Sending a video of you singing Happy Birthday, so the sentiment survives, but your less-than-perfect rendition wont stop you from doing it. A funny face or joke that only that one friend will understand. Or a video or photo invite to your birthday party that you dont want reposted because you cant invite everyone.

NOW ON TO THE MOST USEFUL SOCIAL MEDIA EVER INVENTED!

WHAT DO I DO WITH ALL THIS KNOWLEDGE?

For your kids: Create and Sign a Media Agreement: Here are 3 reasons you should create a FAMILY MEDIA AGREEMENT TODAY!

1.

It begins a must- have conversation.

Online safety is no joke. Kids are smart and kids are quick. And its true that they may know a lot more than we did at their age, but if your kids are online and you havent talked to them about big stuff like stranger safety or how to keep them safe online, its time.

2. YOUR KIDS DESERVE IT.

They do. Many adults feel overwhelmed, intimidated, and afraid of the internet. They check Facebook, maybe even Instagram, but beyond that, they feel like they just dont know enough to help their kids much more. And thats not true, and its not okay. We just cant give up that easily, and theres no reason to.

3. FAMILY MEDIA AGREEMENTS ARE QUICK, EASY, AND FREE. REALLY.

We used the free Family Media Agreement available on Common Sense Media, which is one of my all-time favorite sites ever, ever, ever in the whole, wide world, and we only adjusted it slightly to make it fit for our family. Find one that is age-level appropriate. What you need to know.

HERES HOW YOU DO IT:

(theres a ton more to this, but the bare bones are below)

You must have access to your kids log-ins and passwords at all times. Bam. Youre paying the bills. You need and deserve this.
Terms of Service for most all social sharing platforms say users must be at least 13 years old for use, according to COPPA (Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act). There. So if your kid is younger than 13 and is begging to get on Instagram, tell her its not legal. You should have your Google, Yahoo, Bing, and YouTube settings adjusted or in safe mode so that adult content cannot filter through. Not perfect, but its a start. When your Google is in Safe Mode, bubbles will show in the upper right corner of the screen. I like that.

Your computer should be in a central area of the home. Mobile

devices should be used on main floors, with an adult nearby.

Kids need help when they are searching online. Help them
with search terms, reliable sources, and finding and understanding the search results.

Kids should be unpluggedUNpluggedwhen they go to

bed. Phones and mobile devices should be with the parents, charging and resting so theyre ready for a new day.

ALSO, YOU CAN VISIT:

OpenDNS is a free service you can set up to block adult websites on every device that connects to your wireless network (including mobile devices). If you want the ability to track time spent on specific websites (gaming sites, Facebook etc.), you can get their VIP plan for $20 a year. OpenDNS sounds really techie, but its really not that difficult to set up. Their instructions are very clear and easy to follow. You just need to know the model and brand of your router to get started. To sign up, visit: http://www.opendns.com/home-solutions/parental-controls/
