TYRES ???

The assembly of tyre and tube with air is

the cushion element.

This assembly is mounted over the wheel

rim.

The air inside the tube carries the entire

load and provides the cushion.
PURPOSE OF TYRES

Support the vehicle load.

Provide cushion against shocks.

Transmit driving and braking forces

effectively to the road.

Provide cornering power for smooth

steering.
REQUlREMENT OF TYRES

lt should be able to carry the whole of the

vehicle.

Should not develop skidding even on wet

roads.

Must have low rolling resistance.

Tyre noise should be minimum.

Avoid wheel wobble.

Durability good abrasion resistance.

TYPES OF TYRES

Tyres may be divided as

l. Solid tyres 2. Pneumatic
tyres
Types of pneumatic tyres:
l. Tube tyres 2. Tubeless tyres
TUBE TYRES
TUBELESS TYRES vs TUBED TYRES
TYPES OF CARCASS PLY
BIAS PLY:
Plies placed one over
the other such that
cords make an angle of
40-50 degrees w.r.t
each other.
Can resist stresses
caused due to sudden
acceleration, cornering
and braking.
RADIAL PLIES:
Ply cords are
arranged in the
direction of the tyre
axis.
COMPARlSlON BETWEEN BlAS PLY
AND RADlAL PLY

Belted plies run with less resistance and hence less

power is used.

Radial tyres wear more slowly than bias-ply tyres.

ln radial tyres, Less heat is built up on the highway.

BELTED RADlAL TYRE lS RECOMMENDED AS THE
SUPERlOR TYRE
