    It was about 8 P.M. when Albert returned to his Bandra home. He had a very stressful day and jumping out of his shoes, he just slumped into an easy chair. It was not unusual. Mr. Albert Pinto almost always came home very tired. He worked as a Regional General Manager with one of the nationalized banks. All day through he slogged at his desk – facing the queries from dreary fat audit reports; sometimes parrying the lever pulls for transfer and promotion from the staff and their Godfathers; sometimes straining his eyes to staring at the computer monitor’s screen and the other times to check the e-mails or other on-line communications. In between he had some VIP customers calling for some special requests for overdrafts facilities and project finances or some irate customers shouting about some problems they faced with the branch personnel. The Vice President, Mr. Gajendragadkar, held Albert accountable for everything related to his regional operations; but Albert was not as fortunate in being able to pass on this accountability to his assistants. The branch managers in his region working under him were members of The Bank Officers Union and they had a close network among themselves. Though they treated Mr. Pinto generally well, Albert knew in his heart that if he at all tried to exert any pressure on them, they would become defiant and he would not get much support from the Mr. Gajendragadkar or the top management in disciplining them. Martha knew her husband’s problems and tried to make him as comfortable at home as she could. She brought out a bottle of beer and chicken tikka in a plate. Albert liked to wind down a bit before he sat down to dinner. He switched the TV channel to news. It was his habit to sit and drink a bottle or two of beer with snacks and watch TV. He was looking forward to how Mohan Bagan had done that day in the football match. But just before the sports news, he came across a special news snippet on a recent report on heart attacks put out by American Hearts & Lungs Association. The report mentioned the early signs for a person to suffer a heart attack. Albert would not have noticed or watched the report ordinarily. But two days back he had attended the funeral of his colleague. It was a shocking death at prime age of 45 years, due to a massive heart attack. Albert was shocked to see the findings of the report. The report mentioned that the risk of heart attack increased with age, especially after 50 years and he was 54! The report mentioned overweight and stressful job as other factors. Albert knew that his job was indeed stressful. His sedentary job, TV watching and beer drinking habits had taken their toll and once athletic Albert had put on 14 kilograms more than his ideal weight in the chart shown on the TV. During the annual medical check up, the company doctor had also advised him to start some anti-hypertensive medicine if his B.P. did not get to desirable lower range. The AHLA Report also listed other factors: genetic factor, cholesterol levels and smoking. Albert had wisely chosen his parents; both parents lived to the ripe old ages of over 70 years, so he had no worry on that score. He did not know his cholesterol level; he made a mental note to get it checked during the month. He never smoked –resolutely resisting the temptation to be included in the “in- crowd” even during his college days; so no worry on that score either. All the same, Albert knew that he was neglecting his health. Suppose he gets a heart attack the next week? Will he get the intensive care service in time? It would be crucial to have immediate intensive cardiac care to survive. His home is 8 kilometers from the nearest ambulance service and in Mumbai, it could take an hour at pick traffic hours.
