Typography; Analysis of 30 days of night and Final Destination

Final Destination Typography and Opening Credits

The text fades from black to white depending on the colour of the background shot. The typography however is not of a traditional horror serif, infact I believe the text itself looks quite modern due the emphaqsis of curves. Also, the final destination opening sequence in itself is too quite unusual compared to traditional horror opening sequences. I believe the x ray like shots and midshots of weapons through skeletons connote modern technology and not traditional slasher themes and popular conventions such as blood. However, the order of the credits are in a chronological order. The first few shots are of actors or not as significant members of the cast due to no title underneath the name, thus being at the beginning. However as the opening sequence continues, we see casting b y so on, this connotes more significant members.

Final Destination Typography and Opening Credits

t As I mentioned in the previous slide,

the chronological order of the roles of the film shows more significant members as the sequence goes on. From this shot I can see costume designers and music, straight after music I can see music supervisor is being shown. This shows an order which is quite common in the order of credits in the opening. As the credits go on, you can see the more important people are mentioned towards the end. The writers, producers, associate producers, directors, co-producers all in the order of authority.

30 Days of Night Typography and Opening Credits

The typography of 30 days of night a zombie gore horror is white consistently against dark background colours and a pointy serif font. This is common horror typography as the pointy serif font can connote knifes, weapon and danger. The opening sequence is much more traditional compared to final destination in having darker colours, shots of young children (typical victims in zombie horror), mobs of zombies with blood on their face (blood is a typical convention) and overall gloominess and dark colours connoted from the editing, blacks, dark greys all connote death and danger. However, the biggest difference between this opening sequence and Final Destination is the order of the opening credits. In the opening credits of final destination, which I have analysed earlier show a chronological order where the least significant to the most significant members are shown. However, in this opening sequence the opposite is shown because the most profound members are shown first. From these shots you can see the directors, producers and editors are shown first.

Overall
By analysing typography and opening credits I have a better understanding of what sort of typography and credits I will like in my own text. I have realised the link between the typography and opening credits and genre of the film all connote the overall sub-genre and theme, they all have to be symmetrical of one another and the chronological order is too showing structure. I personally prefer the most significant (directors and producers) to be the last because they stick in the audiences mind and are remembered.
