The design PhIlosophy

The site should be allowed to develop naturally, organically in harmonious adaption to juxtaposed function and to its total environment. Since site is in a hilly terrain, the design criteria needs to address lots of issues. As it is said that architecture is a social art, it provides structures for human activities, influences behavior pattern, enriches the sensible world and provides expression as a continuity to social values. Thereby I aim to develop architecture not only enclosure of spaces but also as an event (people). Thus activity on the site is the major criteriation. The whole design thus aims to invite people to live in Affordable Housing, providing an amiable, healthy and conducive environment to residents. On the basis of data analysis done so far in terms of : Identification and comprehension of the problem Data collection The decision making exercise results in certain broad guidelines which have been discussed under the two guidelines as follows.

The Scape and the means of maintaining contact with nature should be of equal importance with the actual facilities for this :

spectators

activity The two types of activities shall be segregated by the use of levels according to the site condition. All Community spaces shall be opened to the view side.
Public facilities

stepped Sitting areas for all those who wish to sit alone and wish to congregate ,shall be provided. Trees a buffer to check dust & noise pollution

SITTING AREAS
These spaces shall be incorporated by constructing steps or creating the levels . the sitting areas shall be facing the activities.

formal activities required sitting spaces where as informal activities no sitting area is required. informal formal

LANDSCAPING
Good landscaping is of utmost importance. plantation of more trees of indigenous species on all steep slopes and on hill top. this will assure Manali & surroundings shall be planted with good variety of oak suiting the environment and would contribute to the autumn coloring.

view Wind movement canalized Public area

Informal activities and the formal activities shall view be segregated.

Thus the development shall be a combination of the two: To create lively and useful spaces. To give identity to each activity To create visual interest in terms of built forms, masses and surrounding environment.

Functional aspect

Environmental aspect

Recreational activities and open spaced to be integrated with landscaped features .

Stepped landscaping with seating spaces

As the view is on the both side ,on one side of the activity area and on the other side view of open orchard ,public areas can be placed in the center.

ORIENTATION FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS

Since the slopes orient outwards plan orientation shall be outwards. The slope will have staggered units to have an intensive view with clear sunlight .

Building masses to be integrated with existing and added landscape elements to create The landscaping can help relief and natural bring out Intimate spaces for small scale interaction within environment. families, groups.

ROADS & UTILITY Parking shall be segregated from the slopes . pedestrian traffic shall be segregated from the vehicular traffic leaving free movement of residents and pedestrians allowing pedestrian access without the need to cross vehicular traffic. In Housing, owing to bad weather conditions indoor activities have a greater significance as the weather access not to permit outdoor activity .

Housing Blocks will be completely merging with the surroundings and all will be staggered to get views. Blocks will be placed on site that eye level for each one is not obstructed by the other.

Nature of development :- introvert..?? Or extrovert..?? Or a combination of both ??

Parking

Environmental Integration
As the environment is attractive and with a high value ,so the character of the buildings shall be subdued to establish a good relation between the complex as a whole and its natural environment Open space for the observer to watch activities View should not be obstructed from any of the building

residential

Why not introvert ?? Because in the introvert development spaces are created within functional activities. *thus movement gets restricted Visual connections with surroundings is also broken

Then why not extrovert ?? Because, central area gets congested Movement restricted on the periphery of the complex The complex looses its functional identity of each activity

More depending criteria apply in planning for housing Units. attractive environment with max. exposure to sun and protected from wind.

pedestrian

HEATING SYSTEM
The infrastructure will have hot water supply system of heating as fire places are expensive to maintain. It shall also have alternate sources of energy :- solar passive and biomass energy for the heating solution.

Buildings to orient outwards ,to get max. possible view of the apple orchards surroundings and maximum exposure to sun

For the planning of the Administration block there should be segregation between two functions. there are public spaces and residential .both the functions shall be so placed that they get the best views and orientation.
