Pre-heating and Postweld Heat Treating

Pre-heating

is the heating of the weld joint to attain and maintained the specified preheat temperature prior to welding.

1. 2. 3.

Depending on the metallurgical or mechanical properties of the materials, pre-heat and interpass temperature is specified as following: Minimum temperature only Maximum temperature only Minimum and maximum temperatures

SEQUENCE OF WELDING INSPECTION OPERATIONS

PRIOR TO WELDING Material identification o Chemical Analysis o Mechanical Properties DURING WELDING Pre heat and inter pass temperatures o Controls o Measurement methods Filler metal o Identification o Control o Handling AFTER WELDING Post heat treatment requirements Acceptance inspection Method of cleaning for inspection Non-Destructive examination Visual inspection Surface contour and finish of welds Conformity of welds with drawings Magnetic particles Liquid penetrant examination

Base metal conditions o Freedom from internal and surface discontinuities o Flatness, straightness, Dimensional accuracy

Joint condition o Edge shape o Dimensional accuracy o Clean lines o Root opening o Alignment o Backing o Tack welds Special assembly/Fabrication Practice Adequacy and accuracy of jigging, bracing, or fixturing. Application and accuracy of pre stressing or pre cambering
