Cannes, February 15, 2005 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that it signed a 3-year agreement with T-Mobile USA Inc., a member of the T-Mobile International group, the mobile telecommunications subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT). As part of this new deal, Alcatel will continue to deploy its Alcatel 5020 Spatial Atrium Distributed MSC solution for the upgrade and optimization of the operator's mobile core network. Today, T-Mobile USA has 1 million ports installed, with more than 500,000 ports carrying live traffic across the national next-generation mobile core network, the first in U.S. and one of the first in world. The solution will allow TMobile USA to continue to deliver product and service innovation, while reducing its per unit switching costs by enabling network extensions in a flexible manner. The cornerstone of the Alcatel 5020 Spatial Atrium solution is a cost-effective, multi-standard and highly scalable mobile call server/softswitch that controls distributed media gateways and manages call/session control for voice and data services. It simultaneously supports multiple generations of mobile radio access and transport technologies. "We are now positioned to quickly provide our customers with new innovative services, while optimizing our switching costs," said Cole Brodman, senior vice president and chief development officer for T-Mobile USA, Inc. "From day one, Alcatel-Spatial successfully stepped up and met our needs by providing us with the ability to migrate our core network to a future-enabled next-generation network."
Key dates of this partnership Teaming agreement in Nov02 for T-Mobile RFP answer. Joint DMSC proposal to T-Mobile in Dec02 Short-listed in March 2003. Successful Lab evaluation: July03 (Alcatel/Spatial was the only vendor able to achieve this key step). This evaluation convinced T-Mobile to choose Alcatel solution

Plano (Texas), February 9, 2005 - Spatial Wireless has been selected by Siemens Communications, Inc., to supply a 3G wireless MSC solution to support Siemens' key customer of 3G UMTS networks in the United States . Spatial Atrium, a next generation wireless distributed mobile switching solution, will enable wireless carriers to realize significant operation and capital expense savings with a common voice core solution simultaneously supporting multiple generations of radio access, services, and core transport technologies. "By working with Spatial Wireless, Siemens will deliver a comprehensive, integrated solution that is designed to enable Cingular to achieve network efficiencies and lower operating expenses," said Joerg Lippert, vice president and general manager, Mobile Networks, Siemens Communications, Inc. "Together with our partner Siemens, we are honored to be given the opportunity to work diligently to meet Cingular's goal to be the leading 3G wireless carrier in America." said Pardeep Kohli, Senior Vice President, Alcatel Mobile NGN. "Our relationship with Siemens, in conjunction with their strong portfolio of 3G technologies and services, enables us to provide a market leading solution."
Cannes, February 15, 2005 - Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) today announced that it has closed a deal with SFR to trial its mobile Next Generation Network (NGN) solution throughout the operator's 2G/3G mobile networks in France. Alcatel's solution for SFR is based on an innovative, standards-based mobile switching solution, designed by Spatial Wireless, a company recently acquired by Alcatel. The cornerstone of this solution is the Alcatel 5020 Spatial Atrium Softswitch, a multi-standard and field-proven mobile call server controlling distributed media gateways and managing call/session control for voice and data services. Alcatel's distributed MSC architecture will answer SFR's needs for increased 2G and 3G capacity. It will also allow the operator to significantly reduce its capital and operating costs of its mobile GSM/GPRS core network. Furthermore, following the commercial launch by SFR of its 3G commercial service, Alcatel's solution will help the operator optimize its costs for its UMTS network expansion, thus ensuring long-term investment protection. "We decided to test Alcatel equipment as their solution for mobile Next Generation Networks is immediately available and the most advanced and mature today," stated Paul Corbel Chief Technical Officer of SFR. "This solution when validated will allow SFR to significantly reduce our capital and operating costs and to perform network extensions in a flexible and cost-effective manner."
NGN architecture
The key move to a cost effective Core
CAPEX reduction Cheaper MGW ports versus integrated MSC ports cost No need for separate the transit switch layer SS7 over IP roll out will lead to drastic SS7 network cost reduction Less Transcoders requested thanks to TrFO OPEX reduction Operation cost reduction due to less resources (technical support, real estate,..) required as there will be less MSC sites (a MGW site is much simpler to operate) Transport savings due to local switching of local calls (mobile-to-mobile and mobile-to-fixed) Transport savings due to long distance call bypass Operation and transport savings due to introduction of a convergent voice and data transport network Transport savings due to lower bandwidth requirements (thanks to Transcoders located on the edge, silence suppression)
