GUIDE TO SPACE

NUTRITON
The Basics
 WHO: High school students and their teachers (9th -
12th grade)

 WHAT: A competition to design and formulate a


nutrition bar for use in space flight

 HOW: It’s all online with professional guidance, and


the opportunity to work with Mattson food scientists in
Foster City, CA, and attend the Innovation Summit at
NASA.

 WHY: Contribute to aerospace nutrition and win


awards including the production of your nutrition bar!
The Competition
 STEP ONE (8/1/09 – 11/19/09)
1. Register individually
2. Create/join a team

 STEP TWO – Learn how to make a nutrition bar. Look under the
‘Resources’ tab for further information provided by Mattson Inc.

1. Nutrition Bar Primer – This is a basic outline of the science


behind nutrition bars, also lists requirements for the nutrition bar you
will be submitting
2. Sample Formula Template – Instructions on how to use the
formula templates
3. Sample Bar Formulas – Sample formulas of the four main bars
referred to in the Nutrition Bar Primer
4. Nutrition Calculation Template – Instructions on how to use
the Calculation Template
5. Sample Bar Nutrition Calculations - Useful in understanding
how the calculations should be preformed
6. Ingredient Suggestions – This is a list of possible ingredients to
use in the nutrition bar

 STEP THREE (11/20/09)
Team nutrition bar submissions due (Nutrition bar recipe
and 1 page advertisement submitted electronically.
Nutrition bar sample mailed to address provided in ‘Rules’
section)

TEAMS WHO GAINED HIGHEST SCORES OUT OF 45 POINTS WILL BE


SELECTED AS FINALISTS AND NOTIFIED BY JANUARY 8, 2010. PLEASE SEE
JUDGING EVALUATION FORM UNDER ‘RESROUCES’ TAB FOR FURTHER
INFORMATION ON JUDGING MATRIX.
Finalists Program
 Finalist Acknowledgement Form Due 1/31/2010

 Mattson Inc. Nutrition Bar Submission (February 2010)


1. At least one team member and supervisor will travel to Mattson Inc.
for two day program in laboratory and to produce and package a final
bar to be submitted for judging panel. Please look under ‘Resources’
tab for further information about the Mattson schedule.

 Online and other Information


1. Create a video (information on team’s concept) and logo, Team profile
information (overview of team and their project for team to reach out to
public and gain votes for final awards), Blog Posts (at least three posts of
the teams’ journey with the competition (3/26/2010)
2. Donations received through 2/19/2010 will be applied for Conrad
Foundation $1000 Matching Grant
3. Attend and Present at the Innovation Summit at NASA Ames Research
Center, Mountain View, California for a 15 minute presentation and 5
minutes Q & A (4/8/10-4/12/10)

PETE CONRAD SCHOLARS ARE SELECTED BASED ON HIGHEST SCORES OUT OF 60 JUDGING
POINTS
AND 5 PUPBLIC VOTING POINTS (65 TOTAL). THEY WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT THE CLOSING
CEREMONY OF THE SUMMIT. PLEASE SEE JUDGING EVALUATION FORM UNDER ‘RESROUCES’

Scholars will be selected by a combination of the nutrition bar
judging based upon the same 5 criteria listed in round one, a
marketing presentation, and video
