1.) MAESTRO CELESTINO 2.) MAESTRO LUCAS PADUA 3.)LEON MONROY a former classmate of Rizals father. Instructed Jose in Spanish and Latin. Unfortunately, he died 5 months later. After his death, Jose Rizals parents decided to send their son to a private school in Binan.

JOSE GOES TO BINAN -(June 1869) He was


accompanied by Paciano, who acted as his 2nd father.
-They rode in a carromata, reaching their destination after 1 hours drive.

-They proceeded to their Aunts house, where Jose was to lodge.

-It was almost night when they arrived. That same night, with his cousin Leandro, went sightseeing in the town.
-Instead of enjoying the sights, He became depressed because of homesickness.

-The next morning, Paciano brought him to the school of Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz. -Jose described him as tall, thin, long necked, with a sharp nose and a body slightly bent forward, and he used to wear sinamay shIrt.

FIRST DAY IN BINAN SCHOOL

-The school was a small nipa hut about 30 meters from the home of Joses Aunt. -Paciano knew the teacher because he had been a pupil under him before.

it was an afternoon of his first day in school, when the teacher is having his siesta, Jose met the bully, Pedro, and he challenged him to a fight. The latter readily accepted, thinking he could easily beat Jose who was smaller and younger. The 2 boys wrestled into the classroom, much to the glee of their classmates. Jose defeated the bigger boy, having learned the art of wrestling from his Tio Manuel. Because of this, he became popular among his classmates.

FIRST SCHOOL BRAWL

FIRST SCHOOL BRAWL After the class in the afternoon, a


classmate named Andres Saladanan challenged him to an arm wrestling match. Jose, having a weaker arm, lost and nearly cracked his head on the sidewalk. in succeeding days, he had other fights with the boys of Binan.

Juancho - An old painter living near the school. - He was the father-in-law of the school teacher

LESSONS IN BINAN

-Jose spent many leisure hours at the painters studio. -Old Juancho freely gave him lessons in drawing and painting. -Jose and his classmate, Jose Guevarra, who also loved painting, became apprentices of the old painter. -They improved their art, so that in due time, they became the favorite painters of the class.

BEST STUDENT IN -In academic studies, Jose beat all Binan boys. SCHOOL -Some of his older classmates
were jealous of his intellectual superiority. In spite of the reputation I had of being a good boy, the day was unusual when I was not laid out on a bench and given five or six blows. Rizal

END OF BINAN SCHOOLING -Before the Christmas season in 1870, Jose


received a letter from Saturnina, informing him of the steamer Talim w/c would take him home. -He left Binan on a Saturday afternoon,( December 17, 1870) after 1 and years of schooling in that town. -On board Talim was a frenchman named Arturo Camps, a friend of his father, who took care of him.

-On the night of January 20, 1872, about 200 Filipino soldiers and workmen (of the Cavite arsenal under the leadership of Lamadrid) rose in violent mutiny because of the abolition of their usual privileges. (including exemption from tribute and polo by Gov Rafael de Izquierdo) -But after 2 days, the Cavite Mutiny was suppressed by troop reinforcements from Manila. -The spanish authorities magnified the failed mutiny into a revolt for Philippine Independence. -The three leaders of the secular movement, Gomburza, was accused and were executed at sunrise, despite the Archbishops plea for clemency because of their innocence.

MARTYRDOM OF GOM-BUR-ZA

-Paciano. Enraged by the execution of Burgos ( his friend, teacher, and housemate) , quit his studies at College of San Jose and returned to Calamba. -He told the story of Burgos to Jose, who was then nearly 11 years old. -The martyrdom of Gomburza inspired Jose Rizal to fight the evils of Spanish Tyranny.

MARTYRDOM OF GOM-BUR-ZA

Before June of 1872,tragedy struck the Rizal family. -Dona Teodora was suddenly arrested on a malicious charge that she and Jose Alberto (her brother) tried to poison the latters wife. -His wife, with the connivance of a Spanish Lieutenant, filed a case in court. This lieutenant happened to be angry with the Rizal family. - The lieutenant arrested Dona Teodora with the help of Antonio Vivencio del Rosario ( Calambas gobernadorcillo).

INJUSTICE TO HEROS -Dona Teodora was forced to walk from MOTHER Calamba to Sta. Cruz ( capital of Laguna
Province), a distance of 50 kilometers. -Upon arrival, she was imprisoned at the provincial prison for 2 years and a half until the Manila Royal Audiencia ( supreme court) acquitted her for the alleged crime. -Dona Teodora was defended by Francisco de Marcaida and Manuel Marzan, the most famous lawyers of Manila.
