Extreme

Adaptations

What Are Extreme
Adaptations?
Adaptation to extremes encompasses all the
special behaviors and physiologies that living
things need to withstand the planet's harshest
conditions and environments. Whether it's a lack
of oxygen at altitude, the searing heat of deserts
or the bitter cold of the polar regions, plants,
animals and other organisms have evolved a
multitude of coping strategies.
They can be dependent upon various factors of
the area. Like the climate, the atmosphere, the
land, the environment, etc.

Extreme Adaptions In Reptiles
Reptiles need to actively regulate their body
temperatures, preventing lethal extremes .
And some are well adapted to the surface
they live on with modified appendages for
borrowing or the capacity to run on, dive
into/swim in or side wind across loose sand.
Extreme Adaptations In
Reptiles
The Banded Gecko
Nocturnal reptiles such as the banded
gecko and most of the snakes adapt to the
conditions around them by exchanging
heat with air and soil.
Desert Tortoises
Desert tortoises, for example, have a large
urinary bladder that can store over 40% of the
tortoises body weight in water, urea, uric acid
and nitrogenous wastes for months until they are
able to drink. Ureters are separated from water
and can be eliminated in solid form, freeing
water and ions to be reabsorbed. During
extended droughts while the tortoises are
inactive, they can reabsorb minerals from their
shells to use in their metabolic processes.

Extreme Adaptations In Birds
How Do Birds Adapt to Their
Environment?
There are various ways that birds adapt to
their environment. Flying away is one of the
ways. The ability to fly is commonly used by
various birds. They are able to fly from one
place to another.
How Do Birds Adapt To Their
Habitat?
Look at it this way, it depends on their
features and requirements. Say a pigeon,
they can live in many places because they
can live on many foods.
