Introduction to

Methods in Educational
Research

Why Study Educational Research?
To become Research Literate.
Because we live in a society thats driven by
research.
To improve critical thinking skills.
To learn how to read and critically evaluate
published research.
To learn how to design and conduct research.

Why Conduct Research?
Fills in blanks in our knowledge
Expands our own understanding of issues
Reproduce knowledge, to validate others work
Add other perspectives to the knowledge base
Improves Practice
Learn about new practices (new ways of doing)
Evaluate existing practices (why are we doing this?)
Informs about important policy issues
Our Challenge?

To be a TEACHER-
RESEARCHER
A careful, systematic, patient study and
investigation in some field of knowledge,
undertaken to discover or establish facts
and principles. In scientific research,
however, emphasis is on obtaining
evidence to support or refute proposed
facts or principles.

What is Research?
Objectives of Educational Research
Exploration. This is done when you are trying to generate ideas about something.
2. Description. This is done when you want to describe the characteristics of
something or some phenomenon.
3. Explanation. This is done when you want to show how and why a phenomenon
operates as it does. If you are interested in causality, you are usually interested in
explanation.
4. Prediction. This is your objective when your primary interest is in making
accurate predictions. Note that the advanced sciences make much more accurate
predictions than the newer social and behavioral sciences.
5. Influence. This objective is a little different. It involves the application of research
results to impact the world. A demonstration program is an example of this.
Objectives of Educational Research
Objectives Description
Exploration Generation of new ideas for some unexplored
problems.
Description Describe the Characteristics of the existing
phenomena or event.
Explanation Explains relationship and/or causality of the
phenomena under investigation.
Prediction The primary interest of the study is to make model for
predictions of some event/phenomena.
Influence Getting the best of the many possible choices of
influential variables.
