OCCURRENCE OF
BIRTH DEFECTS AT
TERTIARY REFERRAL
HOSPITAL IN BUTUAN
CITY FROM 2004-2013
This project reports on the occurrence of Birth
Defects at tertiary referral hospitals in Butuan
City for the year 2004-2013. The purpose of
this study was to establish baseline data and
identify trends of birth defects by Age Group,
Sex and Geographic location. Data will be
gathered through birth records and birth
records will be categorized using ICD codes.

PROJECT SUMMARY
Bi rth defects consti tute a maj or publi c heal th problem i n the
Philippi nes and i n Butuan City. Statisti cs show that congeni tal
anomalies have been the top 20 causes of death and top 3 for
i nfant mortali ty. The prevalence of bi rth defects in the
Philippi nes and i n Butuan City have substantial public health
impacts not only mortali ty but al so cost and psychol ogi cal
ef fects (Padilla et al , 2011). Currently, Hospi tal s use the World
Heal th Organi zati on Internati onal Statisti cal Classi fi cati on of
Di seases or ICD i n recordi ng the occurrence of bi rth defects.
Unfortunatel y Bi rth defects data collected by thi s system has
not been used to monitor trends or determi ne patient
di stributi on. Given the burden of bi rth defects, it is i mportant to
identi fy the occurrence and trends of bi rth defects so that the
Ci ty Government is able to plan out ef fective preventive and
control strategies.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Because bi rth defects conti nue to be one of the maj or causes of
child mortali ty worldwide, some Countries have begun to adopt
a bi rth defect surveillance system that aims to identify and
monitor the number of bi rth defects by age group sex and
geographi cal l ocati on. I n the Phi lippi nes, there are ongoing
ef forts to establ ish a bi rth defect survei llance program but all
plans have not materiali zed. I n fact i n 1999 the Department of
Heal th partnered with the Insti tute of Human Genetics-Nati onal
Institutes of Health and conducted a pilot study on the
Philippi ne Bi rth Defect Regi stry however i t was not i ntegrated
i nto the programs of the Department of Health. Although raw
data i s avai lable no ef fort has been exerted to consol i date i t.

RELATED LITERATURE:

The objectives of this study are the following:
To determine the occurrence of birth defects among
patients admitted to tertiary referral hospitals in
Butuan City.
To present the distribution of patients by sex,
geographic location and age group distribution.
To categorize birth defects by organ system
To categorize birth defects as either isolated, part of
a recognizable syndrome, chromosomal syndrome or
multi malformed case.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES:

HYPOTHESIS
This study will provide a consolidated baseline data on
the occurrence of birth defects at public hospitals in
Butuan City. Results of this study will help in assessing
areas, gender, and age group with high prevalence of
birth defects. The results of the study will also be vital
for the government in drafting preventive and control
mechanisms in mitigating the burden brought by the
occurrence of birth defects.

PROJECT OUTCOME:

The research will be both a retrospective cohort
and a cross-sectional survey. Primary data
source is medical records from the tertiary
referral hospitals.
