Physical and Chemical

Change
By: Alma Bella U. Guevara
PHYSICAL CHANGE
A type of change that alters a given
material without changing its chemical
composition.

Examples include: cutting,grinding, bending,
the melting of the metal gallium, the
freezing of water and the condensation of
steam to water.

PHYSICAL CHANGE

Other verbs or actions
related to physical changes
include: boil, freeze,
dissolve, melt, condense,
break, split, crack, grind, cut,
crush and bend.

Examples of physical change

1. whipping egg whites (air is forced into the fluid, but no
new substance is produced)
2. magnetizing a compass needle (there is realignment
of groups ("domains") of iron atoms, but no real
change within the iron atoms themselves).
3. boiling water (water molecules are forced away from
other when the liquid changes to vapor, but the
molecules are still H
2
O.)
4. dissolving sugar in water (sugar molecules are
dispersed within the water, but the individual sugar
molecules are unchanged.)
5. dicing potatoes (cutting usually separates molecules
without changing them.)
A chemical change occurs when a substance
changes into something new. This occurs due
to heating, chemical reaction, etc. You can
tell a chemical change has occurred if the
density, melting point or freezing point of the
original substance changes. Many common
signs of a chemical change can be seen
(bubbles forming, mass changed, etc).

Signs of a Chemical Change
1. change in color or odor
2. formation of a gas
3. formation of a precipitate (solid)
4. change in light or heat
Examples of Chemical Change
1. iron rusting (iron oxide forms)
2. gasoline burning (water vapor and
carbon dioxide form)
3.eggs cooking (fluid protein molecules
uncoil and crosslink to form a network)
4. bread rising (yeast converts
carbohydrates into carbon dioxide gas)
5. milk souring (sour-tasting lactic acid is
produced)
6. suntanning (vitamin D and melanin is
produced)
