EMBEDDED SYSTEM

IN
HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
Planning is process of better
Management of resources

People plan their trip For business or for holiday

Both requires home away from Home
At the finger tips – is the expectation
To avoid last minute hassle

Hospitality Industry caters to these needs

By the use of Modern technologies
Modern Technology In Hospitality Industry
Modern technology has become a big tool for marketing
and distribution through website - online reservations and
through communication devices .
Web enabling the operations gives greater presence as an
organization. Consumers can access the same information
online as most travel agents. Online reservations can be
done at any time and from any place
Modern technology has increased the efficiency by
lowering costs in internal operations of the hotels
through Management Systems –
Embedded Technology supports Management systems
-Hotel Booking - Billing - Accounting
- Personal Management - Inventory Management
What are Embedded Systems?
Embedded systems are combination of hardware and
software, and also additional mechanical or other
parts, designed to perform a dedicated function.
Embedded system consists of a compact, ultra
reliable operating system that controls the
microprocessor/Microcontoller inside a device, and
the software related to the applications.
In some cases, embedded systems are part of a larger
system or product, as in the case of an antilock braking
system in a car.
Embedded systems are fast and smart
microprocessors, smaller in size, that are present in
most of the home appliances.

These are the tiny, quick, and smart Processors that

live inside printers, answering machines, elevators, cars,
cash machines, refrigerators, thermostats, wristwatches,
and even toasters.

Embedded systems transmit instructions to other

devices through networking via wires or without wires
( wireless), programmed to operate automatically.
Internet-enabled appliances will be the future
version of the "digital data center." A multimedia
center of a Guest-room device will include, a
digital television that doubles as a personal
computer, web browser, e-mail host; a stereo that
downloads tunes off of the Internet; and a video
camera that records and sends the video images
onto the Web.

Microsoft’s New announcement for Hospitality industry

Microsoft has announced a broad marketing initiative

targeting the Hospitality industries.
The initiative will leverage a wide variety of Microsoft
technologies including a number of Windows-powered
devices such as POS (point of sales/service) terminals,
Pocket PCs, Smart phones, and Portable Media Centers,
kiosks, and handheld.
Windows Mobile-based Smart phones and Pocket PCs will
be utilized "to interact with guests in an enhanced and
powerful way," according to Microsoft.
On the application software side, Smarter Hospitality will
use Microsoft's .NET Framework programming model to
build XML-based Web services and applications. It will
also use SQL Server 2000 for native analytics and reports,
and Speech Server 2004 to deliver the business value of
speech in a cost-effective way, Microsoft says. And, the
initiative will leverage MapPoint, an integrated set of
products and services providing mapping and location
solutions.

A guest can register prior to his arrival

Registration by a personal communication

High-Speed Internet Access available(online booking)

The reservation system can also be used to

book other
hotel facilities
- Conference rooms
- Sports facilities
- Projectors
- Computers
RFID cards are given to the customer on Front Desk at
reception.
this RFID card data is read by Embedded system installed in

various locations
--in guiding the customer to his room
--by path guiding via LED’s to the lift
--Lift stops on designated floor with a message.

When the customer reaches the room the door opens as

it senses the RFID (acts as keys to the room).
The lights are automatically switched on and the control of
all the appliances is given to Media center.
RFID
Radio frequency Identification
RFID technology provides an “over the air” interface
RFID doesn’t require line of sight communication
Some RFID use 13.56MHz frequency band to operate
--Can be read through clothing & body.
--13.56MHz is “passive” can be used with wristbands
that don’t require battery.
RFID has read/write capability. Each RFID tag
contains a factory code built-in to the inlets computer
chip.
Simultaneous identification is possible
RFID dramatically improves system efficiency.
RFID CARDS
Restaurant and Bar
RFID are used in the bars and restaurants. Bar tabs can be
accessed from any terminal, to book restaurant orders,
which can then be printed, immediately in the kitchen.

The facility and the system can accepts payments in a

mixture of cash, credit cards or charged against a room.

Stock levels are updated automatically and the orders for

the raw materials are placed automatically. The guest sales
history is stored for later use in marketing and reporting.
Pricing and Billing

Pricing & billing is done automatically. As soon as

the customer uses extra facility the account is
transformed to the front desk. You can choose to bill
immediately or on account.
Subject to appropriate security controls, specific staff
can be given authorization to override any pricing,
with full control.
BIOMETRICS
 Biometrics helps in increasing the security
in the areas of Hospitality management
- Internal office management.
- House keeping
- Employee attendance.
TRANSACTION MEDIA

Technology in housekeeping

Hospitality industry, the hotel room cleanliness and

amenities are primarily what customers care about and
remember the most.
Using Embedded systems, the duties of the staff are
programmed systematically. The data is collected
automatically for analysis and also carry out the last
minute special instructions from the Front desk.
CENTRALIZED LIGHTING
CONTROLS:
Typical Controls Strategies
--Scheduling
--Daylight Harvesting
--Task Tuning
--Lumen Maintenance
--Occupancy Sensing
Why should we use them?
--Energy Savings
--Increased productivity and
user satisfaction
Centralized lighting
control for mood
setting and enhanced
ambiance
 Occupancy sensors will be the part of the rooms,
mainly because many rooms are left unoccupied for a
significant amount of time each day, typically with the
lights on. Reducing this load will result in measurable
savings.

The occupancy sensor is an energy-saving control

device that turns lights on and off depending on the
occupancy of the space being controlled. When people
are in the room, the lights are enabled on, and when
the room is vacated for a set period of time the device
turns off the lights.
The technology uses both passive infrared (PIR) and
ultrasonic (US) detectors.
PIR is efficient in small areas and US is most
effective in large spaces. Dual technology sensors,
composed of both PIR & US technologies, are
triggered by either heat or motion but require the
absence of both to shut off, alleviating false
triggering problems.
Bar code reader and printer

-Widely used as Identifying tags For luggage

and guest accessories
Though it may be costly technology at present
But in due course of time it is unavoidable to
Compete with international market
