BENEFITS
SI provides a platform where students can develop their science,
math and leadership skills. This is a community! We believe in
helping each other; everyone wins. Help contribute!
Fun, interactive learning
Competitive academic environment
Advanced understanding of school subjects
Student-run - junior students look up to seniors!
Leadership opportunities
SPECTRUM
SPECTRUM - MISSION
Prepare students for academic excellence in science through
coaching, interactive exercises, and a competitive environment
with other like-minded students
COMPETITIONS
SI Challenges
You Be The Chemist (YBTC)
National Science Bowl (NSB)
North South Foundation (NSF)
Philosophy
Pursue one subject until mastery before beginning other subjects.
Decentralized learning small teams of kids driven primarily by
parent volunteers
Distributed Learning
Students must make a strong commitment to one of the core sciences
(Life, Earth, and Physical)
Students with the same primary subject will be sorted into small groups.
Members of groups should encourage and study with each other.
Each group is run by parent volunteers. We need active participation
from parent volunteers.
SI will meet every other week. We will cycle through the subjects each
meeting. This means that each student will meet every six weeks at SI
Students are allowed to switch subjects during the year based on space
availability.
SI Meeting
We will be using electronic system to take the quiz instead of
written tests
To keep it interactive, each question will be discussed as soon as it
is answered.
NSB Team forming
Students need to have 80% attendance to be eligible
6 students per subject will be selected for the buzzer round
Top 2 students are selected based on progress between September & June tests. Progress is measured
as: say if the student scored 24 in June, and 30 in September. Progress = (30 24)/(40 24).
Excluding above two students, top 1 student from September written test
Excluding above three students, top 3 students from November written test
Team 1 will be formed based on the buzzer round results. Total of 18 students will
participate
Top member from each subject (3 members)
Top one (or two) member based on total score in all three subjects (1 or 2 member)
Top member from math (1 member). If the top math student is in top four members above, then an
explicit student for Math is not selected.
Team 2: If second team is allowed, second team is selected using the same principles above
(i.e.) Who came second in the buzzer round
COMMITMENT
Regular attendance
Passion to learn
Positive contributions to the group
Active parent contribution

NSB COMMITMENT
The real benefits of SI are being part of the SI community, growing with it, and taking
advantage of leadership opportunities. This will help distinguish students in high school.
NSB and the other competitions are used as a motivation for learning. While we want to
aggressively compete in NSB, the primary goal is not winning. We had some issues related
to NSB participation last year. To honor NSB guidelines:
If your school participates in NSB, attend as a member of the school team.
If your school does not participate, SI members agree to participate only through SI (NSB
does not want to create multiple teams with different organization names who are part
of the same club).
SI will form the teams in an objective and unbiased way.
No politics please, our goal is to bring the best of every student.
PARENT COMMITMENT
Snack schedule
Active participation and drive distributed teams
Make sure students study and attend
