Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
An automated library system, also
known as a library management system is
software that has been developed to
handle basic housekeeping functions of a
library. The system is responsible for set an
order to the library. Arranging and
classifying of books into its owned place.
Library automation is the general term for
information and communications
technologies that are used to replace
manual systems in the library.
1.1 Background of the study
About the School
Kin Yang Academy is a coeducational
private school located in the city of
Dasmarias, Province of Cavite. The school
was actively running for about 14 years by
Mr. Leodencio T. Obra and his wife Mrs.
Reny C. Obra. It was located inside the
Goldenville Subdivision II in Brgy. Sabang
in Dasmarias, near the boundary with the
city of Imus in the province of Cavite. Kin
Yang was abbreviated as KYA for better
to remember the name of their school.
1.1 Background of the study
Problem
The library at Kin Yang Academy is
operated manually. It is difficult for
the librarian to organize the
placement of the books back to its
own shelves. The borrower
experience hard just to find the book
he was looking for. The librarian will
be confuse on how to bring it back
later on.
1.1 Background of the study
Proposal
The propose system will make the librarian
work easier and faster. The new system will
help him to organize and arrange the books
according to its categories and bookshelves.
As they borrow books from the library, they
will immediately find it by searching from the
system and it will tells them what shelves and
number they are looking for. The library will
be organize and easy to handle with the new
system rather than operating it manually.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
1.2.1 General Problem

The library is operated manually. The
traditional way of handling a library that
operated by hand to hand and place to
place operation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
1.2.2 Specific Problems

Difficult to know whether a book is going
to be add or remove.
Hard to put back the books on its own
place.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.3.1 General Objective

To be operating the library with the new
computerized system.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.3.2 Specific Objectives
To be able to record the books
To be able to categorize the order of the
books
To be able to search for books by means of
using a computer.
To know better and faster what books are
going to be add or remove from the library

1.5 Scope and Limitation
The Language and Database
Visual Basic is the programming
language that will be used for the
library system.
For the Database, the proponents
decided to use Oracle Database.
Oracle has the most flexible and cost
effective way to manage information
and applications that can help
managing the library system.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
Network Design
Star network gives much far better
performance, easy to connect new devices
and similarly components can also be
removed easily, helps monitoring the
network by centralized management, if
one node has failed it doesnt affect the
rest of the network and at the same time
its easy to detect the failure and
troubleshoot it, which the proponents
decided to apply.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
Network Design
Star Topology
1.5 Scope and Limitation
Network Design
There will be three types of accounts for
log in. First is the administrator, the second
one is the librarian, and the third one would
be the student. The administrator is the only
one who can make new librarian accounts
and new student accounts. For the librarian,
he or she is only allowed to manage
transactions, backup the system manually,
and other student account status. The
student account can merely browse through
the library catalogue and view his or her
account status.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
Modules
The proposed library system contains the
following modules:
User accounts
Transact
View
Help
Backup
Catalogue
Reports
Search
1.5 Scope and Limitation
Hardware and Software Requirements
The minimum hardware and software
requirements for the system:
PC with a Pentium II-class processor, 450 MHz
for the processor
For the Windows XP Professional RAM, 160
MB is required
600 MB on system drive and 1.5 GB
installation drive
Windows XP and Windows 7 are the available
operating system
lastly, mouse and keyboard compatible
1.5 Scope and Limitation
Limitations
Limitations on own study includes:
Power outage, not accessible online and
the system only runs on Windows based
computer. Note that any unsaved changes
will be lost in case of sudden power
outage.
