An intense study was not possible due to short span of

INDUSTRY PROFILE
India is considered to be the fifth largest producer of
Aluminum in the world. It accounts to around 5% of
the total deposits and produces about 0.8 million tons
of aluminum.
In India, CUMI is one of the leading players in
aluminum oxide grains. Apart from CUMI, Grind well
Norton, Orient and SNAM Abrasives are the others.
Imports from China are also a major source of electro
minerals for the India Market.
Aluminum oxide industry is one of the major
Industries in India. Aluminium is the most widely
used oxide ceramic material. Its applications are
widespread, and include spark plugs, tap washers,
electronic sub stares, grinding media, abrasion
resistant tiles, cutting tools, bio-ceramics and
laboratory ware and wear parts etc.

It is estimated that if the countrys aluminum
consumption rate maintains, itd be having the
reserves for over 350 years.
Carborundum Universal Ltd is a largest high alumina
ceramic manufacturing company in India. They
pioneered the manufacture of coated and bonded
abrasives in India, besides super refractories, electro
minerals, industrial ceramics and ceramic fibres.
The company's major customers include bearing,
automobile and auto ancillary, alloy steel, foundry and
forging, fabrication and general engineering
industries.

Carborundum Universal, also known as Carborundum
Universal Ltd (CUMI) is an India-based coated and
bonded abrasive manufacturing company.
Carborundum Universal was established in 1954 as a
joint venture between the MURUGAPPA Group, India,
the Carborundum Co.., USA and the Universal
Grinding Wheel Co Ltd, U.K.
Carborundum Universal Ltd is a largest high alumina
ceramic manufacturing company in India. They are an
industrial ceramic material-based products and service
provider, with operations spread across three business
segments namely Abrasives, Ceramics and Electro
minerals.

EDAPALLY UNIT
In 1962 November 29,Sri V.V.Giri,Governor of Kerala laid
the foundation stone of Carborundum Universal Ltd,
Edapally. The work started and supported with the
technological collaboration of Carborundum Company
USA & Universal Grinding wheel Company UK.
Production started in 1995 with a few number of staff and
workers and average production was 65 tones per month.
During 1966-67,850 tonnes was the production. After that,
the company gained strength from the committed efforts of
staff and workers. Now the production is around 1800
tonnes per month.
The momentum gained in the production enhanced
the company to export its products. CUMI, Edapally
bagged the prestigious Commendation award for the
energy conservation from Kerala govt. for the year
1997-98,in the major industries category.
The company started exporting and as a result when
demand rose starting plant 2 at Edappally unit in the
year 1994 did expansion. The plant has modern
machines and operations carried out computerized
manner. The capacity of plant 2 is 850 tons per month.

Brown Fused Alumina is the main product from Plant
1.It is used for grinding metals of high tensile strength.
PLANT-2
. Main product of unit is White Fused
Alumina(WFA).The company has a furnace which is
Tiling Furnace, first plant in India having Tiling
furnace for producing White Alumina. White Fused
Alumina(WFA) is made from Calcined Alumina and is
a friable product.

CUMI maintain their TQM through the 5 S which are
SEIRI, SEITON, SEIKESTSU, SEISCO, and SHITSUKE.
SEIRI (Sorting):It is sorting between wanted and
unwanted things in selected area, region and domain.
SEITON (Systematic): It means a place for everything
and everything in its place, like the use of labels, color
codes for easy identification, planning storage with
accessibility and so on.

SEISCO (Shiny): It deals with the job of thoroughly
cleaning the work place. The godowns, scrap yards,
supply lines are inspected and cleaned.
SHITSUKE (Self-discipline): According to these
actions plans are developed for maintaining the set
standards and self audits are conducted.

SYSTEM DEPARTMENT
Each department is interconnected with the help of
ERP(Enterprise Resource Planning)system,
Ramco Virtual Works, a Chennai based software
company provides ERP solution.

FINDINGS

CUMIs main source of fund is from the corporate
office (Chennai) .Issuing of share and short-term
loans from the companys consortium of banks like
State Bank of India, HDFC Bank are the other
source of funds.
CUMI takes suggestions from employees mainly
relating to the cost reduction. The better suggestions
will be considered by the management and rewarded
properly.

The Performance Appraisal methods used in CUMI
are supervisory rating and self-rating.
The CUMI has been following the KAIZEN Japanese
scheme for continuous improvement in all activities
of the business. This scheme means that the quality of
the products and services is determined by its uses,
efficiency, and value for the money and comparison
with other products.

SUGGESTIONS
Redressal of day-to-day grievances can motivate
employees to be more effective. Grievances should be
settled reasonably, swiftly and transparently.
CUMI should concentrate on promotional activities
of both national and international market to
capture the potential customers. It helps to build
reputation and fame to the company.
CUMI can come up with ways to reduce the
production cost, keeping in mind to make the
product economical enough to compare in the market.

2010-11 was a year of excellent all round performance
for Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI) across
the world. The company, its subsidiaries, joint ventures
and associates turned in a record performance in the
wake of improving economic conditions worldwide,
more particularly in India, South East Asia, Russia and
to an extent in Australia and South Africa.
