Water-Source Heat Pump
Applications

 Water-Source Heat Pumps have been in use in

large commercial and office buildings,
interconnected with cooling towers and
boilers, for many years. Popular
configurations now include:

ü Using well water in open-loop systems
ü Using closed loops in vertical geo-exchange
systems.
ü Using closed loops in horizontal geo-exchange
systems.
HOW DOES IT WORK
Well water in open loop systems
 Ground water is
pumped from one
well to the heat
pump(s).
 Heat is extracted from
(or rejected to) the
water.
 The water is then
returned to another
well, or discharged
to the surface.
Closed loop with vertical heat
exchangers
 Heat pumps use the
same fluid over and
over.
 The fluid circulates
within closed loops,
installed in deep wells.
 As the loop temperature
changes, heat is
exchanged to (from)
the earth.
Closed loop in horizontal heat
exchangers
 The same fluid
(antifreeze solution) is
used over and again.
 Loops are buried
horizontally in
trenches, six feet deep
or deeper.
 Heat is extracted from
the earth when the
loop temperature is
colder than earth
temperature.
Closed loop with pond heat
exchangers
 The heat pumps use
the same fluid over,
as with other closed-
loop systems.
 Loops are placed at the
bottom of a large
pond, and heat is
extracted from the
pond water.
In Commercial Buildings
Heat Pumps Share Heat Within
 Offices often contain heat-generating
equipment, like computers, copiers and lights.
 Some sections of a building need cooling when
other sections need heat.
 Heat pumps extract heat in the areas that need
cooling, warming the water in a common loop.
 Other heat pumps give that heat to the areas
that need heat, cooling the common loop.
 A large chiller and a boiler keep the loop
temperature within a set range.
Operating Costs

 Operating cost for heating and cooling a 3,200

square foot house, with a closed loop vertical
system, should average about $1,800.00 per
year.
 Average monthly cost can vary from $36.00 /
month to $316.00 / month.
Compare Operating Costs
 Closed-Loop Geothermal heat pump, at 17 cents
/ KWH, costs about $1,800.00 per year to heat
and cool the 3,200 sq. ft. house.
 Straight electric heat, at 17 cents / KWH, would
cost over $6,070.00 per year for the same
house.
 Fuel oil at $4.00 / gallon, burned in an 80%-
efficient furnace, with a 12-SEER air
conditioner, could cost over $5,000.00 per
year.
Environmental Advantages
 Heat pumps do not burn fossil fuel. There is no
air emission.
 ¾ of the heat comes from the earth, and is
renewable.
 The antifreeze used in closed loop systems is
propylene glycol, the non-toxic type used in
recreational vehicles.
 The water used by open loop systems is
returned to the earth unchanged, except for
heat.
Conclusions
 GeoExchange technologies have evolved considerably
since their beginnings
