been a feature of the earliest civilizations. In
Greco-Roman culture hospitals for
recuperation and rest were built at thermal

History
Marco Polo in the 13th century; the "grand tour" of the British
aristocracy to Europe in the 18th century; and the journeys of
David Livingstone through Africa in the 19th century are all
examples of early tourism. Thomas Cook is popularly regarded
as the founder of inclusive tours in 1841 .

Before the 1950s, tourism in Europe was mainly a domestic
activity with some international travel between countries,
mainly within continental Europe. In the period of recovery
following World War II, a combination of circumstances
provided an impetus to international travel. Among the
important contributing factors were the growing number of
people in employment, the increase in real disposable
incomes and available leisure time, and changing social
attitudes towards leisure and work.
introduction
Tourism is travel for recreational, leisure, or
business purposes, usually of a limited duration.
Tourism is commonly associated with trans-
national travel, but may also refer to travel to
another location within the same country.

Tourism has become a popular global leisure
activity. Tourism can be domestic or
international, and international tourism has
both incoming and outgoing implications on a
country's balance of payments. Today, tourism is
major source of income for many countries, and
affects the economy of both the source and host
countries, in some cases it is of vital importance.

Types of tourism
Domestic tourism, involving residents of the
given country traveling only within this country.

Inbound tourism, involving non-residents
traveling in the given country.

Outbound tourism, involving residents traveling
in another country.
