Diseases An introduction

A disease is an abnormal condition affecting the body of an

organism. It is often construed as a medical condition associated
with specific symptoms .

It is of two types

infectious disease :
It may be caused by factors originally from an external source

autoimmune diseases:
it may be caused by internal dysfunctions

Why do we get ill as climate
changes ?
The human body takes time to adjust to any kind
of change, whether it is a change in diet, a change
in geography, or a change in temperature and
climate. Every time the season changes, our body
takes time to get accustomed to it, giving
infections an opportunity to attack it. During this
period of adjustment to the changing season, the
body's immunity tends to be low and therefore
the body is susceptible to attacks from viruses and
bacteria.

Malaria
Causes: The disease is spread by Female
Anopheles mosquito. Since, there is a problem of
water logging during the rainy season, mosquitoes
get conducive conditions to breed.
Symptoms: Fever at regular intervals, bouts of
shivering, muscle pain and weakness are the
symptoms that a patient shows while suffering
from Malaria.
Prevention: Since this disease is spread by
mosquitoes, so mosquito repellents and nets
should be used to prevent it.

immediately

disease is prolonged fever. Severe pain in abdomen
and headache also indicate towards this disease.
Prevention: The patient should be isolated from
the rest of the family. Getting a vaccination in
advance also helps.
Hepatitis A
Causes: This epidemic is generally caused by flies. It
can also spread by coming in direct contact of the
patient.

to flu i.e. high fever together with headache, pain in
joints and vomiting.
Prevention: The patient should be kept on complete
bed rest and should be given a high calories diet, but fat
and oily food should be avoided. The most important
prevention of this disease is vaccination.

mainly in children during peak summer.
Caused by: The mumps virus, it is transmitted when an infected
person sneezes or coughs.
Symptoms: One of the most common symptoms is the swelling
up of the persons salivary glands at the base of the neck. It
typically starts with a few days of fever, headache, muscle aches,
tiredness, and loss of appetite, and is followed by swelling of
salivary glands.

cause cataracts, retinal damage and
other eye problems.
Eye infection like - styes, bacterial and
viral conjunctivitis are also seen with
increased frequency and causes
widespread weakness in body.

MEASLES
Also called rubeola or morbilli, it is a common condition seen in the
summers.
Caused by: The paramyxo virus, it infects the lining at the back of the
throat. It is transmitted the same way as chicken pox.
Symptoms: Its initial symptoms are high fever, cough, runny nose, sore
throat and red eyes. These symptoms later progress to whats called a
measles rash (rashes that look like small red spots), fever, cough, runny nose
and tiny white spots within the mouth. The measles rashes usually appear 3-
5 days after the initial symptoms and start around the hairline and face in

that contribute to lowering our immune system by putting in

cold.

Prevention
