IMPLICATIONS OF
DIVERSE GROUPS




TEACHERS STUDENTS SCHOOLS CURRICULUM
INTRODUCTION
A diverse society such as in our country has its
implications on the education system in general.
This effects the teaching and learning process.
In this context, teachers need to be aware of
their role as educators and the concept of diverse
groups.
Thus the teacher is responsible for understanding
the diversity of cultures and groups among the
students in the classroom.


TEACHERS
Teachers need to be dedicated and
professional.
Teachers should teach without showing any
racial difference towards their students.
Teachers such integrate students from
different races and gender in order for the
students to be able interact with each other in
a wide perspective.
Teachers need to b aware of the students
social class and social background and teach
without showing any preference to the pupils
social class.
This will ensure integration of pupils from
different social backgrounds.
Teachers play a role in guiding students make
their career choices.

Teachers should ensure there are no racial
discrimination and discourage their students
from getting involved or stirring any form of
racial riots or fights.
Racial unity can be cultivated through the
teaching and learning process.
Teachers should encourage the usage of a
standard language in teaching.

Teachers need to be innovative and creative in setting
their teaching and learning objectives.
Teachers need to ensure that the objectives are met.
Teachers need to be visionaries and able facilitators,
guides and counselors who are always committed in
their profession.
Teachers need to be aware of the current changes and
be able to implement these changes in their teaching.
This will ensure a good public perception of teachers
and the teaching profession as a whole.

STUDENTS
Students are the clients of the teachers in the
classroom.
The teaching and learning process involves the
students.
As such, teachers need to optimize all their
teaching skills when dealing with the students in
the classroom.
Students behavior patterns, cultural background
and attitude need to be observed and
understood before any action in taken in the
classroom.

Students need to be aware of school rules and
regulations.
Activities that will encourage racial unity and
integration should be carried out.
Students should be encouraged to socialize with
students from other races and religion.
Students should be encouraged to mix with the
opposite gender but at the same time be aware
of their limitations and behave in proper and
appropriate manner with the opposite sex,


Students should be encouraged to communicate
effectively in the classroom especially with the
teachers and their peers.
Teachers should use appropriate language and
provide a safe and loving environments during
the classroom interaction with the student.
Students can be easily motivated and influenced .
As such, teachers need to portray positive
attitudes for the students to emulate.





Students with attitude problems need to be
identified and given the necessary help and
counseling.
Teachers need to be stern and assertive and
discipline need to be implemented in the class in
a positive manner.
Students need to be given fun activities and the
teaching and learning process should be fun to
ensure the students enjoy learning and do not
get bored easily.
SCHOOLS
Schools need a more specific approach to ensure
a diversity in education to cultivate the interest,
potential and abilities in all types of schools.
Currently, there are various choices of types of
schools in the countrys education system.
The types of schools at the primary level are:-
SK
SKJC
SJKT


The types of schools at the secondary level:-
SBP (Sekolah berasrama penuh)
SMT ( Sekolah Menengah Teknik )
SMKA ( Sekolah Menengah Keb. Agama )
Sekolah Model Khas
SMK Harian
Among these schools there are schools that are
categorized as premium schools which have a
history and tradition of over 100 years old.

There are schools that are located in strategic areas such as
Putrajaya and Cyberjaya and have very good infrastructure and
beautiful designs. These schools are located at the multimedia
corridor and nearby to the government complexes.
Premier schools have contributed to the development of Malaysia
since its establishment. These schools have produced many national
and corporate icons and leaders and is an historical institution that
is the pride of the country.
KPM also has set up schools specifically for special needs pupils at
primary and secondary levels.
KPM also has schools that are run by other agencies such as
Maktab Rendah Sains Mara, private schools and international
schools.


Centennial schools (more than 100 years)
have contributed to the development of the
country. Schools such as Penang Free school,
Malacca High school, Methodist Boys School.
Schools such as Sekolah Model Khas are
schools that has primary level 2 pupils and
secondary school pupils under one roof. This is
a relatively new concept in providing physical
facilities that are conducive for the students.
Diverse social groups have established schools
of different races such as Chinese and Tamil
medium schools.
The Ministry of Education aims at overcoming
the diverse social cultural problems through
activities carried out in schools. The ( RIMUP )
Program Integrasi untuk Perpaduan is one of
the efforts of MOE to instill racial unity among
students from various races.
The establishment of religious schools reflects the commitment of
the MOE to instill moral values and religious beliefs in the students.
Schools is an avenue for educators to teach and instill good values
in society regardless of the students social and cultural
background.
Schools should use the official language and students should be
encouraged to use and participate in the use of the official
language.
The education system has achieved racial unity through a standard
education system.
Schools are responsible to organize and carry out activities that
involves participation of students of both male and female.
Schools emphasize and encourage racial integration while the
cultural values of diverse groups are still maintained and practiced.
Covert Curriculum
The curriculum is a written planning of the
syllabus that is systematic and has an objective,
content and strategy to be carried out within a
time frame that is set. (Saedah Siraj :2001)
The covert curriculum focuses on a curriculum
that is applied in the teaching but it is not
documented.
It can be defined as the norms, beliefs and values
that are not specified in the curriculum but
taught in the classroom sub-consciously.
