ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION Founders: Mel Young, Co-founder and President Harald Schmied, Co-founder Type: Non Profit Organization The Homeless World Cup was set up to use football, street soccer, as a catalyst for social change. The first tournament took place in Graz 2003 uniting 18 national teams. 6 years on 56 nations were united for Melbourne 2008, which included the first Women's Cup. It has triggered and supports grass roots football projects in over 70 nations working with over 30,000 homeless and excluded people throughout the year.

We use football as a trigger to inspire and energize people who are homeless to chase their own life. By this approach the homeless world cup creates better opportunities for people who are currently homeless and excluded and reduces homelessness on a global level. CURRENT SCENARIO The 12th annual Homeless World Cup tournament will be held in Santiago, Chile from 19th to 26th October 2014. 64 nations and over 500 players will travel to South America to show the world how a ball has helped change their lives. This will include players representing reigning champions Brazil (men's) and Mexico (women's). The 8 day tournament will be held in Plaza de Armas in central Santiago and over 100,000 spectators are expected to watch the action unfold.
