No country in the world where a speaker of English

cannot be understood.
English is the language of international politics.
One of the six official languages of the U.N.O
Link language of the Commonwealth countries.
Become a world Language.
Language of culture give and take.
Language of international trade and industry.


It gives glimpses of the various developments taking place
in the world.
F.G.French says, Anyone who can read English can keep
in touch with the whole world without leaving his own
house.
English is rich in Literature..humanistic, scientific and
technical.
If we cut ourselves from English ? ? ?
Its the mean of preventing our isolation from the world.
Our national and regional languages must be developed but
this does not mean that English should be discarded.
To do this mean closing a window in the world of modern
Kwolegde.
English is the rich store-house of knowledge.
There is hardly anything important in the world that
has not been translated into English.
It plays a vital role in higher education.


It is doing a useful service as a link language.
It is responsible for our contacts with the outside world.
No country can live an isolated life in the modern era.
There is a need of political, economic and cultural link
with the rest of the world.
English is a Lingua Franca.
Conclusion
So, we have to depend on English for international
business and politics and mainly on English for contact
with Western thought and culture.

Why we need this subject as a compulsory subject in
Pakistan.
Majoroty of students fail.
Students have no taste.
Students are taught English for about six periods a
day for ten years.
When reached university they know 250 word.
They were able to learn one period one word.
They do not know the commonest structure s of
English.
Conditions of English varies from place to place.
Urban students are better than rural schools.
Public or modal schools are better than ordinary
school.

1. Lack of clear cut policy
Courses are often literature-based.
No emphasis on English Language.
Syllabi need modification.
EFL and ESP courses should be included.
2. Little understanding of aims of teaching
English.
Teachers no understanding knows only to enable
students to get through the examinations.
Students cram instead of mastering the skill.
Teacher is concerned with pass percentage.


3. Dearth of competent teachers
All teachers are not fully competent.
Shortage of teachers.
Those avialable have little idea of correct usage,
have wrong pronunciation and limited
vocabulary.
Teachers are not teaching their own subjects.
Not aware of the new development in the
teaching of lnguage.
4. Wrong teaching method
Teachers use GTM instead of Direct method.
Speech is neglected in GMT

5. Defective textbooks
Not systematically written.
No attention paid to selection and gradation
of language items in them.
Those books dont have adequate exercises
for language practice.
Neither have suitable illustrations.
Not accomplished with teachers handbooks
nor by workbooks for students.

6. Faulty system of examination
Examination fail to test the students attainment
of language skills.
Questions set aims at testing the cramming of
students
Method of examination subjective instead of
objective.
Students memorise important questions.
There is no exam of testing the aural
comprehension and speaking ability of the pupil.
In objective type questions students do cheating.



7. Insufficient provision of audio-visual aids
Teachers function without A/V aids e.g.
gramophone records, tape recorders , film strips
radio, television,projecters etc.
Inexpensive aids like flash
card,charts,picture,white boards are not
available.
8. Over-croweded classes
Students remain as a passive learners.
9. Shortage of time
Internationally required eight classes in a week
Reduced time due to inclusion of new subject




10. Unsatisfactory supervision
11. No supervision of the work of the teacher.
12. Teachers fail to get any guidance from
experts.
1. The policy regarding the place of English in
our education system should be well-
defined.(keeping in view the national and
international importance of English).
2. Teachers must keep in mind the aims of
teaching English(focuss on all four skills).
3. Teachers should posses a good command of
English.
4. Grammar must be included in B.ED syllabus.
5. Refresher courses should be arranged for the
in-service teachers





6. Teachers should be encouraged to read
journals to keep themselves informed of the new
developments in the teaching the language.
7. The examination system need to be improved.
The questions should display the students
mastery of the language skills.
8. Cramming should be discouraged.
9. Oral test should be introduced relating to
skills.
10. Examination department needs to be made
more effective.

11. Necessary audio visual aids should be made available to
schools.
12.The teachers should know how to made inexpensive aids.
13. Teacher should know how to use audio visual aides' tape
recorder, film strip
14. Although it is not possible to reduce the no of students in
the class, yet the teacher may divide the class into groups and
appoint bright students as group leaders.
15. Teacher should reduce the use of mother tongue to the
maximum in the class so that the students get more practice in
listening to English
16. There should be subject sepecialist at the district level to
provide guidance to the teachers of English.
