Chemical Burns Flush burnt area with large quantities of water for at least 15 minutes Seek medical attention
Small Burns Acids wash with water. Apply 1% sodium bicarbonate solution. Wash with water again Alkalis same as for acids but use 1% acetic acid instead of bicarbonate solution
Bromine wash with water then apply dilute ammonia ( 1 part to 15 parts water )
Sodium and potassium remove the metal with tongs and then float in water for 20 minutes. Dry and cover with sterile gauze
Phosphorus wash with water then bathe in 3% copper sulphate solution. Cover with wet dressing. Cuts, Wounds and Fractures If cut is slight and bleeding is not profuse: Remove dirt / glass. Wash under running water. Apply a clean, dry sterile gauze. Go to hospital for stitches if necessary If bleeding is copious : Apply a large compress and with direct pressure on the wound
Wounds: Dont bandage tightly
Fracture : Do not move the victim Treat for bleeding and shock When victim is to be transferred, improvise a splint support Eye Injuries Wash eye with plenty of water Do not use water if a foreign material like glass is in the eye Do not try to remove foreign material in the eye Call for the doctor immediately Shock Symptoms: Paleness Cold Moist skin with perspiration on the forehead and palms Vomiting Shallow breathing Trembling
Treatment: The patient should be down with head lower than the body, kept warm and still Keep the victims airway open If he vomits turn his head on one side so that the neck is arched Electric Shock Switch of the current supply Stand on the insulated material (like rubber shoes / use rubber gloves / use a broom ) and push victim from the current source Start artificial respiration immediately Keep the victim warm using blanket Call for the doctor Fainting Lie the victim down in the open Loosen all clothing especially the collar Place his head between his knees until it flushes red Smelling salt should be use When conscious, give some cold water Poisoning Poison in mouth: Split it out immediately Wash with plenty of water Send for a doctor at once
Poison swallowed: If the victim conscious give 2 to 4 glasses of water or milk Induce vomiting Give an emetic such as soap suds Repeat until vomited fluid is clear Do not induce vomiting when poisoning is due to strong acid or alkalis or hydrocarbon Give an demulcent like egg white, a glass of milk or a teaspoon of mineral oil
Inhaled Poison Remove patient to fresh air Keep the patient warm and rested If breathing stop, begin the back pressure arm lift method of artificial respiration Poison By Skin Contact Remove all form of contact Run water trough the affected area with plenty of soap Never apply antidotes such as alkali to acid and vice versa Methods Of Artificial Respiration Mouth to Mouth Method Inspect the mouth and remove any obstructions (e.g. dentures) Place victim on his back and loosen tight clothing Tilting the head back raising the chin Insert your left thumb in the mouth, grasp the lower jaw, lift it forcibly upwards and forwards
Hold the lower jaw up and close the victims nostrils by pinching with the finger Breath in, open your mouth wide and place tightly over the victims mouth Blow gently and watch the chest rise Remove your mouth Repeat blowing at the rate of 12 breaths per minute If no air exchange, turn the victim on his side Give several sharp slap between the shoulder blades to dislodge foreign matter Remove obstruction Repeat process Arm-Lift Back Pressure Method Place the victim in the face down position Fold the arm and placed hands on the top of each other Turn victims face on one side with the cheek upon his hand Kneel at the head Place your hands under the arm just above the elbows and lift them upwards At the same time rocking yourself backwards drawing the arm towards you until you meet firm resistance and tension
Replace the arm on the floor Move your hand to the mid- back just below the shoulder blades Rock forward with your arms stiff and exerting pressure Repeat procedure if required Repeat the cycle for 12 times per minute at a a uniform rate
