Definition
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a
concept whereby organizations consider the
interests of society, based on the impact of
their activities on customers, employees,
shareholders, communities and the
environment, for all aspects of their operations.
Corporate Social responsibility is best defined by
the World Business Council as The continuing
commitment by business to behave ethically and
contribute to economic development, while
improving the quality of life of the workforce and
their families as well as of the local community
and society at large.

The World Business Council for Sustainable
Development is an organization with 160
international companies, having a shared
commitment to sustainable development via
economic growth, ecological balance and
social progress. They are working in a
number of areas including building a low
carbon future.
By 1990, 90 % of fortune 500 firms embraced
CSR and are actively promoting their CSR
activities.
Deutsche Bank spends 3% of its net
income on CSR efforts.
In a European CSR survey of 2007,
50% of the companies were found
engaged in stakeholder dialogue.
INDIAN SCENARIO

Tata Group, BHEL, Wipro, Bajaj Auto
Ltd., Larsen & Toubro, Sriram
Investments, Otis Elevator Co.India,
ACC, Asian Paints, Brook Bond,
Colgate Palmolive, Escorts, SAIL,
ITC, Ashoka Leyland etc.
Infosys Technology Ltd has 5 major CSR themes, which
include education, healthcare, art and culture, rural
upliftment and inclusive growth. They identify partners
and beneficiaries based on their goals, credibility,
performance and alignment to infosys vision and values.
They have touched the lives of 150000 beneficiaries
during 2007and they claim they will continue to conduct
business responsibility and ethically in the years to come
Reliance Industries Ltd has launched project Drishti in
2003, in association with the National Association for the
Blind (NAB-a non profit institution serving the blind in
India for over five decades) is a nation wide corneal
grafting drive to bring light in the lives of visual challenges
from the under privileged segment of the society- has
illuminated lives of over 5000 indian- all freeof cost.
