Proposal prepared by the Houston Team, Feb 8, 2010
Executive Summary
COMMITTED EXCITED READY TO GO
Executive Summary

Houston offers the opportunity to:

Expand beyond the existing PanIIT network of the East, West and Midwest and hold the conference
in the heart of US in the 4
th
largest city and the fastest growing area of US
Engage truly excited volunteer base with organizational experience and a collective leadership,
who have led large organizations and held conferences of comparable size

reaching out to over 1500 attendees from this area. Our Houston team includes alumni from 7 IITs
Lower the conference cost. Travel, accommodation and food are the cheapest among all major US
cities. Easy access from anywhere in US / World. The weather is PERFECT from September through
December. Attendee cost (registration, travel, lodging) will be about 30% lower in Houston
compared to either East or West coast. Conference costs including logistics, food, audio visual, etc.
for a comparable facility (Category 5 hotel located downtown) in other metropolitan cities are at
least 50% higher. Cost per attendee for 3000 delegates is ~$330
Expand the IIT branding in technologies of the future, e.g. energy, biotechnology, space
technology. Houston is the global center for energy, space and healthcare. The conference theme

Why Houston?
17
The Houston conference will enable IITians to impact the global
challenges in energy and environment

An excellent opportunity for global PanIIT conference to capture the interest
and imagination of a very large number of alumni in south central US, which is
also home to a large, diverse industrial base
It is time to move to the heartland of the US and hold the event in the fourth largest
city and the fastest growing area of the US.
A strong appetite and passion among local alumni for bringing PanIIT 2011 to
Houston since the event has not been held in this region
Past events held in the East, West and North. The next logical choice is South.
IIT branding within this area has been sporadic and spotty, built on local
efforts
It is time we expand the IIT branding to the technologies of the future, e.g. energy,
biotechnology, nanotechnology
Alumni resources from this area have not been garnered effectively for nation
building nor for advocacy for the alma mater
It is time we capture the untapped alumni power in these areas and bring new
perspective to our movement

To:
The PanIIT Organizing Committee

Dear PanIIT Organizing Committee,

I understand your organization successfully concluded your 2009 PanIIT conference in
Chicago where you had over 3000 attendees and many notable speakers including
President Bill Clinton, and are currently considering Houston as possible venue for your

Ashok Rao
President,
TiE Houston
TiE-Houston is a not-for-profit organization focused on
fostering entrepreneurship through networking,
mentoring, and participation in the local and global
economy.

Following the guideline and philosophies of the TiE
organization, the Houston chapter will attempt to
mobilize the people of Houston and the Indus region
based on the common tenet of entrepreneurship. The
Houston region now supports a critical mass of Indian
professionals and academics. In addition, the role and
participation of Indus professionals in the current wave
of business activity has burgeoned, and the need for
an organization such as TiE-Houston - bringing the
Indus and "mainstream" populations together in
business and social partnerships - is now more
evident.
