MSDS statement
Trade secret exemption (if applicable)
Hash border
Bilingual
Sample Supplier Label
Workplace Labels
Required if a container does not have a
supplier label

Must contain:
Product identifier identical to MSDS
Safe handling information
MSDS statement

Sample Workplace Label
Material Safety Data Sheets
MSDS:
Required for each hazardous material
Must be readily available
Must be updated when new information becomes
available and at least every three years
Normally provided by the supplier
Most available on the web (eg. www.ccohs.ca)

Material Safety Data Sheets
Must include:
1. Hazardous ingredients
2. Preparation information
3. Product information
4. Physical data
5. Fire or explosion hazard
6. Reactivity data
7. Toxicological properties
8. Preventative measures
9. First aid measures
Worker Education
Must include:
Labels
MSDS
Hazard information
Procedures: use, handling, storage,
disposal, presence of fugitive emissions
Emergency procedures

Worker Education
Training normally consists of two parts:

Generic: This course overview of WHMIS
requirements.

Workplace-specific: To be provided by your
supervisor procedures specific to your work
environment

Class A, Compressed
Gas:
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class A, Compressed
Gas:
Compressed gases,
dissolved gases, and
gases liquefied by
compression or
refrigeration
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class A, Compressed Gas:
Risks:
Could explode due to
pressure
Could explode if heated or
dropped
Possible hazard from both
the force of the explosion
and the release of
contents
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class A, Compressed Gas:
Precautions:
Ensure container is secure
Transport with safety cap,
cylinder cart
Do not allow to fall or drop
Store in designated areas
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class B, Flammable and
combustible material:

WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class B, Flammable and
combustible material:
Solids, liquids and gases
capable of catching fire
in the presence of a
spark or open flame
under normal working
conditions
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class B, Flammable and
combustible material:
Precautions:
Store in designated,
well ventilated areas
Avoid heating, sparks,
flames
Ensure electrical
sources are safe
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class C, Oxidizing
material:

WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class C, Oxidizing
material:
Materials that increase
the risk of fire if they
come into contact with
flammable or
combustible materials
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class C, Oxidizing
material:
Risks:
Increase fire and
explosion hazard
Can cause skin or eye
burns
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class C, Oxidizing
material:
Precautions:
Store away from
combustibles
Wear body, hand, face
and eye protection
Store in proper
containers that will not
rust or oxidize
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class D, Poisonous and
Infectious Material
Division 1,Immediate and
Serious Toxic Effect:

WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class D, Poisonous and
Infectious Material
Division 1,Immediate
and Serious Toxic
Effect:
Materials can cause
death or immediate
injury when a person
is exposed to small
amounts
WHMIS Hazard Classes
Class D, Poisonous and
Infectious Material
Division 1,Immediate and
Serious Toxic Effect:
Risks:
