HENOCH-SCHNLEIN

PURPURA
INTRODUCTION
a.k.a. Anaphylactoid Purpura
Allergic purpura < Autoimmune Vascular Purpura
< Acquired Alterations of Vessel Wall Structure
It classically follows an upper respiratory
infection, but has been associated with foods
and drugs, insect bites, and vaccination
Children are most frequently affected:
Between ages 3-7 years old
Boys are twice affected than girls
Purpuric episodes begin and subside
spontaneously (lasting about 4 weeks)


PATHOGENESIS
A disorder which results from an
autoimmune process that is not clearly
understood
Nonthrombocytopenic purpura:
Patients develop vascular inflammation due to
immune disturbance:
IgA, IgG, and C3 are deposited in the
cutaneous and renal vasculature
Antigen-antibody complexes cause immune
injury to the vessel wall
