The Parts of a Dictionary and
their functions
Guide words A dictionary has guide words
at the top of each page. This part shows the
pronunciation first and last words on page.

Pronunciation- Dictionary shows the
pronunciation of the word. It is the phonetic
spelling of the word that is, a spelling that
represents it as it is sounded. To interpret
these phonetic spelling, a pronunciation key is
provided.
Syllabication- Dictionaries also show how words
are divided correctly in syllables. A syllable is
art of a word uttered in a ingle vocal impulse. To
indicate syllables, a dot (.) or a light hyphen (-)
may be used.
Part of Speech- In every dictionary, the part or
parts of speech of a word are shown by
appropriate abbreviations; n. noun; adj.
adjective, vt. verb transitive, v.i. verb intransitive
Definition- most words have several meanings.
Dictionaries present the various meanings of a
word in the order of how it is used. The meaning
is presented first, followed by other definitions.

The High Dove
Last summer vacation, my cousin and I decided to
go to the Fiesta Carnival. The first ride we tried was
the roller coaster. Soon we were fastened and began
the climb up the hill. Just as we got to the topmost
part, we started zooming down. All of a sudden, as we
were flashing down the hill, I bumped my head
against the wooden side of the car. I felt dizzy and
there was a terrible lump on my head. We kept going
up and down. Never was I frightened in my whole
life. No amount of words will convince me to ride on
a roller coaster again.
