A punt which does not cross the LOS continues in play. All players may catch or recover the ball and advance it.
A blocked punt that does not cross the LOS may be advanced by either team as well.
A blocked punt that crosses the LOS is treated as a regular punt.
Stay in proper coverage lanes as you sprint down the field. Keep inside and in front leverage.
If you have containment responsibilities, you must contain. Be aware of blockers outside of you.
Never overrun the ball. Break down, square up, and make sure tackles.
Punt coverers must give the punt returner opportunity to catch the ball.
A fair catch cannot be advanced by either teamnor may the fair catcher be bumped or tackled (unless he
mishandles the ball).
9. A man signaling for a fair catch cannot block.
10. A fair catch signal- know that the receiver must extend one hand over his head and wave it from side to side. A
signal may only be given once and it is in force. An invalid signal is penalized.
11. When a fair catch is signaled for, always expect the ball to be muffed. Keep your two yard distance and position
until the catch or muff. Be ready!
12. Any muffed punt which hits the ground is a free ball and belongs to the team that recovers it. This recovery cannot
be advanced.
13. When covering a punt always try to keep it from going in the end zone. Those responsible for containment get
behind the returner on a fair catch. Position yourself 1 yard outside the end zone to down the ball. Downing the ball
with your feet on the goal line will result in a touchback and give the ball to them on the 20.
14. If we down a punt, the covering man must stay with the ball until an official blows the whistle. The ball can be
advanced if the whistle hasnt blown to stop play. Make sure to down the ball. We will pick up the ball and hand
it to the official.
15. A punting play is considered a change of possession so time is out at the end of the play.
