CM305.73

Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be able

to
State the use of PROM.
Distinguish between UVEPROM and EEPROM.

CM305.73

Recap

In the last class we have studied about

The advantages & disadvantages of dynamic RAM over
static RAM.
Need for RAM.

CM305.73

Do You Know ?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of
dynamic RAM over static RAM ?

What is the need for RAM?

CM305.73

Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM)

The ROM which allows the user to store the data by the
process of programming is PROM.
PROMs come from the manufacturer as unprogrammed.

These are programmed to meet the user needs.

Once a PROM is programmed , it cannot be changed.

CM305.73

Need for PROM

PROM allows the user to program the unit in his own
laboratory.
PROM programmers are available to facilitate the
procedure of programming to store.
PROM is more economical , to store small quantity of
data.

CM305.73

Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory

(EPROM)

An EPROM can be reprogrammed by first erasing the

existing program.

There are two types of EPROMs.

(1) Ultra Violet Erasable PROM (UVEPROM).
(2) Electrically Erasable PROM (EEPROM).

CM305.73

UVEPROM: The Ultra Violet light is sent

through the window to erase all the data
stored in ROM.

EEPROM : The EEPROM can be erased and

reprogrammed using electrical pulses.

CM305.73

Comparision between EEPROM and UVEPROM

EEPROM
These devices can be
erased and
programmed with
electrical signals.
The voltage on the
floating gate structure
permits the storage.

UVEPROM
These devices can be
erased and programmed
with Ultra Violet light.
The photo current from
the floating gate
structure permits the
storage.
CM305.73

EEPROM

UVEPROM

Speed of the operation is

more.

Speed of the operation is

less.

Easy to construct and

economical.

Difficult to construct and

expensive.

In EEPROM the locationby-location erasable is

possible.

In UVEPROM all memory

locations are
simultaneously erasable.
