THE PRODUCT

Holographic Data Storage System

Introduction to
Holographic memory
It is a memory that can store information in form of holographic
image.

As computer systems continue to become faster, they will need

a way to access larger amounts of data in shorter periods of
time.

Holographic memory is a three-dimensional data storage system

that can store information at high density inside the crystal or
photopolymer.

Hence holographic storage system has the potential to became

the next storage generation over conventional storage system.

PRODUCT FEASIBILITY
Does it make sense? Is it something consumers will get excited

about?
Does it take advantage of an environmental trend, solve a
problem, or take advantage of a gap in the marketplace?
Is this a good time to introduce the product or service to the
market?

Are there any fatal flaws in the product or services basic design
or concept?

WHY SHOULD CUSTOMERS

PURCHASE THE PRODUCT?
Three-dimensional data storage will be able to store more information in a smaller
space and offer faster data transfer times.
Unlike other technologies that record one data bit at a time, holography records
and reads more than a million bits of data with a single flash of light.
This enables significantly higher transfer rates than current optical storage
devices.

High storage densities and fast transfer rates, combined with durable, reliable, lowcost media, mean that holography is poised to become a compelling choice for
next-generation storage.

In addition, the flexibility of the technology allows a wide variety of holographic

storage products to be developed, ranging from handheld devices for consumers to
storage products for enterprises.
IT can be imagined having 50 hours of high-definition video on a single disc,
50000 songs on a postage stamp, or 500 000 X-rays on a credit card.

POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS
Holographic memory systems can potentially provide the high
speed transfers and large volumes of future computer system.
One possible application is data mining. Data mining is the
processes of finding patterns in large amounts of data. Data
mining is used greatly in large databases which hold possible
patterns which cant be distinguished by human eyes due to the
vast amount of data.
The many advances in access times and data storage capacity
that holographic memory provides could exceed conventional
storage and speedup data mining considerably
Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) is an optical disc
technology still in the research stage which would hold up to
3.9 terabytes (TB) of information

INTERESTING FACTS
It has been estimated that the books in the U.S. Library of
Congress, the largest library in the world , could be stored on six
HVDs.
The pictures of every landmass on Earth - like the ones shown in
Google Earth - can be stored on two HVDs.
With MPEG4 ASP encoding, a HVD can hold anywhere between
4,600-11,900 hours of video, which is enough for non-stop playing
for a year.
