FOUR PROBE METHOD

APPARATUS REQUIRED

FOUR PROBE KIT

OVEN
THERMOMETER
GERMANIUM
CRYSTAL.

PROCEDURE

STEP 1:

Switch on the instrument

and set the knob to mA

mode.

STEP 2
Using the range knob set
the current value to 5 mA

or 6 mA

STEP 3
Turn the knob back to the
mV mode .

STEP 4
Ensure that the voltage
switch indicates 2V,if it

is not set then the

readings will be out of
range.

STEP 5
Switch on the oven and
ensure that the oven
temperature knob is
initially at low until the
thermometer reads 100 oC
and change the temperature
mode in to high after that.

STEP 6
Note down the voltage
readings for every rise in
5oC. Start taking
temperature from 60oC.
Take readings till the
thermometer reaches
125oC. The voltage
readings can be noted
down from the display
screen. Remember the
voltage readings are in
Volts. Convert them into
mV.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

Important difference between four probe and two

probe method is that in the case of two probe
method the contact resistance of the connecting wire
is also taken into account ,while in the case of four
probe it is more accurate. At the same time four
probe also has a disadvantage that it is applicable
only if the surface is even.
The graph must be plotted only after getting a
straight line which is obtained above 140 degrees.

This method can be used for the materials having flat

surface.
Here we are finding resistivity.
We can also find I V characteristics.
Here we are doing R T characteristics.
