Pre-production & Research

STORYBOARD

:a sequence of drawings, typically with some directions and dialogue,

representing the shots planned for a film or television production.

Creating a storyboard is very useful,

but for a video production or
animation it is vital. By planning
each shot beforehand, directors
and crew can understand what they
are aiming to achieve and have
something to build on.
For my project a storyboard will
help me organise and pre-visualise
the project. It will make it easier to
sort the shots and angles and to
see whether they group well or not.

SCRIPT

:a written text of a play, film or

broadcast

A script will help me outline

every aural, visual,
behavioural, and lingual
element required to tell the
story.
It will also help the actors to
memorise what they have
to say and to understand
simple stage directions.

RISK ASSESSMENT

:identifies some of the more common risks associated

with the project

Risk assessment is the process

where you: Identify hazards.
Analyze or evaluate
the risk associated with that
hazard. Determine appropriate
ways to eliminate or control the
hazard.
To do this I need to think about
what might cause harm to people
and decide whether I will take
reasonable steps to prevent that
harm and also identify sensible
measures to control the risks in
the workplace

RECCE

:derived from "reconnaissance; refers to pre-filming visit to a location to

work out its suitability for shooting.

A recce is an essential part of

the preparation and research
processes to meet potential
contributors, assess locations
and research stories.
This will arm me with
information that I can use to
plan the script and filming
schedule. It will include access
to necessary facilities and
assessment of any potential
lighting or sound issues, and is
closely related to location
scouting.

SHOOTING SCHEDULE

:A shooting schedule is a project plan of each days shooting

for a film production.

It is normally created and managed by

the assistant director, who reports to
the production manager managing the
production schedule.
I need to break down all the elements
of the film to figure out how many days
it will take to shoot the film. The
process includes figuring out what
scenes can be shot together in the
same day, scheduling actors to work
consecutive days, and how to tighten
the schedule so the film can be shot in
fewer days.

SHOT LIST

:A list of shots helps in the planning and filming of

your movie.

They allow you to systematically verify

that you are covering every angle you
need and help you remember everything
you need in a particular sequence. This is a
very important element in the preproduction stage because it helps organise
and schedule specifics that I may forget in
the field. It is one of the principal factors
in organising the shot list is efficiency. The
considerations determining the
organisation of our shots, in more-or-less
descending order of importance, are major
location (and time of day), camera setup
angle, shot size, on-set logistics, and pickups. Additionally, there may be some
exceptional considerations that might
determine when certain shots must be
scheduled.

MOODBOARDS & MIND-MAPS

It is a visual thinking tool that helps

structuring information, helping me
to better analyse, comprehend,
synthesise, recall and generate new
ideas.
Also has the intention to evoke or
project a particular style or concept.

: an arrangement of images, materials, pieces of

text, etc.
: a graphical way to represent ideas and concepts.
