Why Unitised Cargo ?

Unitisation is the combining of small
components (or units) of a load into a
single larger unit.
ADVANTAGES :
To reduce actual handling cost
To reduce "IN PORT" time
SIDE BENEFITS :

Container Markings

Each container is identified by a series of 5 to 7 digits

having four letter prefix which identifies it owner .
Example :
NOLU 210001
A 20' dry container owned by Neptune Orient Lines.
Numbers on the container must be clearly displayed on
the four sides and the roof as well as on the inside for
easy checking and identification as the container moves
from one location to another .
Other markings on door include the manufacturer data
plate , customs and safety plate ,
container tare weight, internal cubic capacity and
maximum gross weight .
The company's logo is also prominently displayed to
highlight its corporate image .

Soft Top containers
Removable roof containers

Constructed with doors at one end and top completely

open.
Interior protected from weather by solid removable hard
top or a canvas cover.
Large or awkward items to be packed via the door .
Over height cargo and heavy cargoes that requires to be
handled by crane to be packed via the top

May have arrangements for either gravity or pressure
discharge
Frame constructed as several hoppers within an ISO
framework
Some of tank type.
Some may have full size doors at one end and a smaller
discharge hatch at the other.
Filling hatches (2 or 3) are set in the roof.
Some have provision for aeration or vibration to assist
discharge
Suitable cargo includes free flowing solid cargoes (eg
granules, powders, grains).

Container ship - Numbering

ROW

- A row is the width of a container looking down

the hold . 00 is allocated to the row on the center line
with ODD numbers increasing to STARBOARD, and
EVEN numbers increasing to PORT.

TIER

- Each tier is one container height looking at the

top from the side, and increasing vertically.Tiers of
containers stowed underdeck are numbered from 02 , 04
, .....,16 etc. Tiers of containers stowed on deck are
numbered from 82 , 84 , 86 , 88 etc .
